Iji Evacuation Boats

Large ships with a permanent crew ready to relocate residents of the Iji Islands in times of volcanic activity.

Iji evacuation boats are much larger than normal Iji Boats that you see around the isles. They are always ready and have a skeleton crew that lives on board at all times (these crews are replaced in shifts but the ship is always ready with a crew and well supplied).   There are easy access ramps and pulleys to load the ships as quickly as possible in the event of major volcanic activity from Isle of Gurita in the belly islands at the middle of The Iji Islands cluster.   Ijians prefer to use these boats over Udarra Birds for transport as they are easier to load and safer to stay on. The udarra birds can become startled and unreliable when the volcano erupts, and the ash can make it dangerous to fly in certain wind directions.   The evacuation boats have large sails, as well as sturdy oars in order to make a swift escape. Evacuees will be moved along the coast, usually to the north to the head islands for better shelter and protection from large waves. Only in dire circumstances will they be evacuated south to the wild islands.
