Depressions are engraved or etched into a flat printing plate (not up to scale). Printing steps: 1) The plate is covered in ink. 2) The ink is wiped off the surface of the plate, and only remains inside the grooves. 3) A paper is placed on the plate and compressed against it. 4) Once the paper is removed, the ink has been transferred to it.
