Dwarves

Written by White Rook

They had always been stubborn and resistant to change, even in the beginning of everything. But there used to be a great pride that puffed them up and filled them with a kind of light. Now, few still have that light. Most are husks of their former selves, wrapped up in bureaucracy and prejudice like armor, hiding the hollow darkness within...   --33rd of Copper, Year 70

History

The Dwarves are a stubborn people who do not change easily. They have the second most power in the city, as it was their city before Death was released. They are split into two subraces: Iron and Copper. Familial Piety is the official religion for the dwarves. They venerate their ancestors, as well as current family members especially elders.   Iron Dwarves- The ex-immortals. They have darker skin, larger beards, and are on average taller than copper dwarves. They make up most of the ruling class of dwarven society. They believe that a great prophecy, called the Golden Horde, will be fulfilled only if they keep their culture as stable and unchanging as possible. The laws and projects the Immortal Dwarves set down are treated as divine in nature. One such project is the Great Lowway Project, a massive underground road that would connect Stadupglod with the Dwarven capital, Fastnberg. The Iron Dwarves are the only subrace of Dwarf on the Forge Council, they also hold the highest seats in the Old Dwarven Government, save for a few notable exceptions. They are the most xenophobic of the races, reacting rudely or aggressively to other races. This leads to the occasional Iron dwarf death squad organizing to kill entire neighborhoods. The more radical Iron Dwarves see the recent influx of refugees as a threat to their very being, and react accordingly.   Copper Dwarves- Born after Death, they make up most of the working class of Dwarven society. They have lighter skin, thinner beards, and are on average shorter than Iron Dwarves, but physically stronger. Most do not believe in the divinity of the Golden Horde nor the laws and projects put down by the once-immortals. Copper Dwarves value money and fine craftsmanship above all else. While they do not hold any seats on the Forge Council, they are the primary subrace of The Pelgar Group, the financial organization that primarily controls the flow of money and the collection of government taxes throughout The City of Stadupglod. This organization also runs the Lowway construction project which employs many different races as miners, explosive experts, and Lineguards. Copper Dwarves also make up most of the military force of the city, but are rarely promoted above the rank of Ett Stal. (Commander). They also are the largest group of shop owners and tavern keepers, as it is easier for Dwarves to own or rent land through the Property Preservation Branch (PPB) of the Iron Dwarf and Elf controlled government of The City of Stadupglod
