Living Ice Species in OmniVerse | World Anvil

Living Ice

The Living Ice are a major threat to those who live in the frozen wasteland. No one knows where they came from, only that they started appearing shortly after World War III and the dawn of the global ice age that followed afterward. Speculation has come and gone as to the origins of these creatures, with no clear answers known at this point in time.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They have a similar anatomy to that of humanity, with two arms and two legs, a body and a head. That's where most of the similarities end, however. The living ice are more of a twisted parody of humans, with their lower legs devolving into spiked ends that dig into the ground. Their hands tend to be freakishly large, with some Living Ice occasionally having straight-up spikes replacing their hands. Their bodies are covered in ice and crystal, sometimes covering up their entire chest and arm areas. The heads of these beings tend to be able to split wide open, either horizontally or vertically, revealing a large row of jagged teeth. There are no visible eyes, ears, or nose located on these creatures, which leaves how they see the world around them up for guessing.

Biological Traits

The blood within these creatures, when they are sufficiently damaged, takes on a purple; viscous fluid. The blood tends to freeze up quickly outside its body, with a high risk of exposure to Acute Freezing Syndrome as a result of messing with the blood.

Genetics and Reproduction

People have reported seeing living ice come out of Frozen Monoliths en masse, which leads some to believe that they are created within the tall structures. Hearsay is that those who suffer from Acute Freezing Syndrome suffer the fate of becoming Living Ice in the cases where they end up 'returning to the cold' in the late stages of the sickness; though this is disputed by the survivors within the frozen wasteland.

Growth Rate & Stages

The lifespan of each Living Ice seems to be different, with some living for a time-span of 10 years, while others end up staying alive for around fifty years. What determines this is unknown to the survivors. The longer the Living Ice lives, however, the taller and heavier they end up getting, with the crystals and ice on their bodies accumulating and growing denser over the years.

Ecology and Habitats

The Living Ice has appeared everywhere throughout the frozen wasteland, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Large crowds of them end up dropping the temperature of the surrounding area, resulting in massive blizzards occurring. They tend to feed off of meat, their insatiable hunger resulting in the violent decline of various animals through the world. When the Living Ice construct a Frost Monolith, they tend to crowd around the area the monolith is located, as if they were protecting it for whatever reason. When they kill a human, the Living Ice will bring the body to the Monolith, though what happens afterward is currently unknown.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

People speculate that while they can't hear things exactly, they have nerves hidden underneath the frozen exterior of their bodies that allow them to 'feel' soundwaves. A crash of wood in the forest is indistinguishable from the yell of a human. Alongside that, people have reported that the creatures are attracted to heat; though how far that they can sense it is another matter that some cannot agree on.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Icequitos originate from Mosquitos that tried and succeeded to feed off of the blood of the Living Ice. As a result, however, these Mosquitos end up mutating and spreading Acute Freezing Syndrome; dying shortly after giving birth to more Iquitos and succumbing to the disease.

This is fun! :D It reminds me of the scene in "A Dance with Dragons", where one of the shapeshifters got out of his body and felt a sudden flush of cold. Here, this feeling seems to be connected with the disease. I wonder how it plays in nature. What happens if someone with AFS gets frozen? Are their lifespans stretched?

Assuming they survive the disease and the symptoms that come along with it, possibly! It's not a possibility I've considered, though it's good to consider said possibility :)

These guys sound terrifying - I like that they grow taller and more icy as they grow older. I would not like to come across them in the wastes! D:
