Inverse Rain Physical / Metaphysical Law in OmniVerse | World Anvil

Inverse Rain

Inverse Rain is an unnatural weather phenomenon that occurs in various locations throughout the Earth. While initially occurring in small pockets at the start of The Bloom, Inverse Rain would begin to appear in greater quantities around the turn of the millennium. After The Withering, however, Inverse Rain would become a regular issue for people to deal with.

Manifestation

Inverse Rain typically occurs in forested areas, valleys, and on mountains that has a high amount of moisture in the air; oftentimes after rain occurs. Wheras normal rain occurs when it is cloudy, Inverse Rain can occur in the middle of the day. It's effect is subtle at first, with tiny drops of water seemingly being pulled out of the ground and flying up towards the sky; growing over time. Eventually, this steady upward sprinkle can become a inverted torrent, large amounts of rain suddenly flying up into the air. This process can last from minutes to hours at a time.

While a single day of Inverse Rain isn't necessarily bad, repeated incidents of Inverse Rain can lead to heavy drought conditions, making an area go from being humid to drying up. As of the present, parts of New Africa and West Asia, and a majority of the Lost East are experience heavy amounts of Inverse Rain, making the living conditions harder for the survivors living in those countries. It is estimated that unless efforts are made to counteract Inverse Rain, then all three countries will become uninhabitable by 2026, 2027, and 2023 respectively.

Very cool! Is there any theories or superstitions on why they happen?

Quite a few, though they'd probably range from 'maybe' to 'a toss in the ***ing dark'. Most people can gather is that it involves magic acting all sorts of screwy.

Sounds quite terrifying to witness, and the drought it causes is not good. I wonder what countermeasures could be put in place. Pumping water into the affected areas, maybe?

Possibly! ...now im getting the idea of a 'Rain Reverter' or something where its your job to make an area have water in it to handle droughts of inverse rain. Might keep that one in mind.
