Ashamaal

Ashamaal is a thriving town surrounded on all sides by large rock outcroppings and mesas in the near distance, and the Sindar desert lands further out around that.
Upon first approaching the one is greeted with huge often overlapping tents of bright colors woven in geometric patterns. A variety of exotic smells assaults and entices the senses, and a cacophony of voices, music, trading fades into hearing. Approximately a third of it consists of it's famous market which sells good from everywhere. About a tenth of it makes up the residences and a great library and center of learning along with school of alchemy carved out of the rock of a mesa. And the what the town is most famous for, Heart's Desire, the nickname for the network of brightly colored tents containing the gambling dens, drug trade, and every other worldly pleasure you could imagine, making up nearly all of the rest of it.

Demographics

The permanent population mostly consists of the Safreen people, though all manner of peoples and races can be found here to one degree or another. Most of them work the various shops and services in the town.

Government

The town is run by a council of nine merchants led by the eldest of them simply called The Elder. The Elder is the face and speaker for the council and they break ties during votes of the council, but are otherwise equal to the other council members.

Defences

The inhospitable lands around Ashamaal have proven to be a sufficient defense so far to deter any would invading army, and the town is policed by a watch about one thousand strong.

Industry & Trade

The city has a thriving economy based on trade and services for sale. Safreen trade caravans come through and stop here selling all manner of goods and making Ashamaal a place where you can find just about anything you could want or imagine, if you have the coin for it. It also offers nearly any service you could desire from the mundane like gambling halls, to the illicit including a magical drug made from silver needle extract that is highly sought after by some. Finally, it has a school of alchemy that is sometimes remembered to be a training ground for assassins, though this is denied.

Tourism

Most people who travel here come for one of two reasons, sometimes both. Either to buy goods, or to buy services. The town has a thriving market with everything from the mundane to the magical for sale. The services offered run the gamut of nearly any worldly pleasure you could imagine.
