Cameron Hillard Character in Luridity | World Anvil

Cameron Hillard ("Cam")

Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior

Cam is leader of the Spark militia, and when Tracers have his men pinned down and backed against a wall, he's the one who can get them out. Though he'll do his share of damage, with his ability to rapidly transition to the Current, Cam is defacto medical evac in the field.   Cam Hillard took over leadership of the Spark warriors shortly before The Lull. His predecessor died of over-exertion after defending against a particularly brutal attack on the Sparks' shield. He's taken it as a personal failing that his warriors weren't in top shape and innovating during The Lull, while their enemies were murdering innocent people on Galvan: women who didn't even know they were Sparks, while their enemy improved in battle and managed to defeat their first few forays to Galvan's surface to stop them from killing even more.   Because he shoulders the blame, he's also vowed to ensure no other women are lost and to watch over his warriors in the field. With so much responsibility and guilt stubbornly keeping him from delegating much of anything, Cam can't--won't--make time for a mate. He certainly doesn't want to risk Linking with one, much less letting a mate distract him from what needs to be done on Galvan.   His priority is simple: Their people are dwindling in number and desperate, and he is determined not to lose anyone else. Not his warriors, not his brother, and most certainly not the women who don't know yet that they are Spark.   The Sparks have lost enough. His warriors deserve nothing less than everything he has to give.

Cam's father was among the warrior elite, and took the front lines with those Sparks who fought the power-hungry Tracers on the fateful day of Betrayal. Cam's mother stayed back to more closely defend him and his younger brother. However, his father and mother were not only mated, but Linked, and when Cam's father fell in battle, his mother also fell. The boys did not see her hit by an attack, but after she collapsed, no amount of coaxing from him or his brother would wake her. It wasn't until the smoke cleared from the battle, the two planes ripped apart, that Cam learned of his father's death as well.   The boys had only each other, and were brought up in the Warrior's Caste. As such, they trained hard in order to protect other Sparks, never wanting another child to have to suffer like them, or like the other children who had survived the attack. By the time children were born again, years had passed, and Cam and Thallan were on the elite team, defending the plane from Tracer incursions. But during the battles, their mentor, the leader of the Spark militia, over-exerted his power. Due to his abilities, position, and respect, Cam found himself thrust into the role of leader at just 21 by a vote of his peers. He vowed to protect them all, at any cost.   Two years of fighting at the head of an army saw the end of the Tracers' attacks, but Cam kept his men working to stay in top shape, on highest alert for patrols, and maintaining rigorous security. Half a year after the Tracers went quiet, the Domestics and Grounders began to settle down, looking to rebuild, make homes of their own, start families. Still, Cam refused to allow his Warriors to be at ease until finally, two years into the Lull, a group approached him and requested permission to begin a mating challenge.   He realized his fears of Linking to a woman and costing her life, as his father had taken his mother, were his own, and that others were content to take that risk. More, they needed to take that risk, because they had been living in a constant state of battle and alertness for a decade. His men wanted to join the Domestics in reforging their plane, and bringing up the next generation of Sparks. His brother wanted to start a family. So Cam downgraded the alert level on the Plane, requiring only a moderate guard and maintenance sparring.   When the High Aunts got word of the Tracers' purge of their people on the planet's surface, and the restoration of the Current, eight years later, everyone was eager to go and help. However, the Domestics discovered they can no longer travel the Current, as it is afraid it will unwillingly hurt them the same way it did during the Betrayal. Only Cam's Warriors were able to travel to Galvan, at first tackling missions in shifts.   His teams were not effective enough to save the first few lost women they went to rescue. Worse, the Tracers had gotten even stronger and built a network of human allies, where the Sparks had let their skills decline. Cam blames himself and has taken extreme steps to get his men back into shape, while still recognizing their need for downtime. He and his Paragons often take extra missions or provide backup, so that Cam can send any injured men to the Current during a fight with Tracers or their allies.

Thank you so much! It's helpful for me to refer to when I'm writing too, so I can keep his personality on track :D
