Everyone loves bread, but sometimes it needs something extra. Why not slap some butter, a tomato slice or two, and a nice spicy chunk of a chicken's breast on top of that delicious meal. Your mouth will be watering in no time!
The Mesapõ region in the Kingdom of Sarala is well-known for it's wide variety of delicious sandwiches. The Mesapõ sandwich recipes have become a traditional part of a proper meal. They are eaten as appetisers and snacks.
Rye Bread Culture
Rye bread has for centuries played an important role in the lives of all Saralians. Giving someone a loaf of your bread is seen as a token of appreciation from one person to another. Bread plays a valuable part in marriages, funerals, religious ceremonies, and numerous other events.
An essential ingredient of nearly all of the recipes is the traditional local rye bread. Presenting inferior bread to guests is considered a great offence.
In each household, it's the mother or grandmother's duty to teach her descendants the recipes. Although the Saralians have their own writing system, most of the commoners are illiterate and therefore rely on oral traditions instead of recipe books.

Sandwiches
Firefish Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 1 slice of rye bread
- Butter
- 1-4 spiced lake-sprat fillet
- Chopped onion or dill
- 1 slice of a boiled egg

Preperation:
To make a Firefish Sandwich, cut a slice of a proper traditionally made rye bread. Cover the bread with butter (the thickness of the butter layer is a matter of personal preference). Once the bread has been buttered, but as many fillets of spiced lake-sprat on your bread as you want. The recommended amount is around one to four fillets. Choose the amount depending on the strength of the fish taste that you want. Afterwards cut a slice of boiled egg and place it on the fish. Once that has been done, sprinkle chopped onion or dill on the sandwich, finishing the meal by adding extra greenery.
The Firefish Sandwich is perhaps the most famous of the Mesapõ dishes. They are traditionally served on wooden platters that contain a mixed variety of other sandwiches.
Pepperbreast Sandwich
Ingredients:
- 1-2 slice(2) of whole wheat bread
- Egg butter
- 1 grilled chicken breast fillet
- Black pepper
- Rock salt
- 1-2 slice(s) of a boiled egg

Preperation: To make a Pepperbreast Sandwich, you must first grill the chicken breast and rub the salt and pepper into it. While grilling the meat, an experienced chef should be able to finish making the egg butter. Once the meat and egg butter are ready, cut a slice of bread and lay the egg butter on its surface evenly. After that, carefully place the chicken breast on top. By then you will be ready to cut a slice or two of a boiled egg and place it on the chicken to add the finishing touches to the meal. Recently people have started adding an additional slice of bread on top of the boiled egg, but that step isn't necessary.
