Orioles | World Anvil - Isekai Codex

Isekai has started its grand restructuring! Please bear with us as things move around and get situated in their new home.
Names are also in the process of changing, so some names are inconsistent currently.

Orioles

Songbirds on Wing

Notes float on the breeze as wings flap by, the wind carrying both song and bird from place to place, echoing behind as they continue forward. In the summer months, these songs mark the warming rays rising above the horizon, bathing the world in its light. As the days become colder, the songs slow as the birds that sing them follow the fleeting warmth towards the south and the band of islands that do not feel the cold as much as other places. When the days slowly began to warm again, the songs would continue to the north and elsewhere, marking the summer and the changing seasons.   Orioles are medium-sized passerines or songbirds that are found throughout most of the world. Variations of this bird vary greatly in color and habitat, living from the warmer northern areas in the Cradle of Clay to the Zóni to the warm southern grasslands in the Sunset Fields. Orioles are one of many songbirds in Isekai but are most often known for their brilliant orange and gold colors that stand out from a distance. Even the darker-colored variants of the Orioles will have a brightly colored chest that becomes more prominent while they sing.   Those who have crossed paths with Orioles are often drawn in by their songs that carry so well on the breeze. These birds are known for their short whistles that blend together and sound like numerous wind instruments that traveling Bards tend to carry. These creatures are colorful and respected for their skills and sounds, much like the Passeri that resemble them.

Basic Information

Oriole Nest
As small birds, Orioles build small nests but are often seen to be the most precarious nest builders. These nests are normally built on the ends of branches, mostly suspended in mid-air.

Anatomy

Orioles are small birds, often ranging from six to nine inches from beak to tail. These birds can weigh upwards of two ounces and have a large wingspan of up to thirteen inches. Most other songbirds are of a similar size to Orioles, with their only defining difference being their bright coloration.   Males are often slightly larger than females, but this is sometimes difficult to tell because Orioles have long tails and fairly long legs that sometimes distort proportions. There is some variation in size between the various subspecies, but this is very minuscule, often leading Scholars to discount any true differences.   Orioles are specifically known for their short set of recognizable whistles that are often high-pitched or a chatter call. Their calls are often made up of clear whistles with vibrant tones that repeat a series of notes a number of times. This call is so well-known and predictable that its sequencing has been used as the basis for a variety of music.

Genetics & Reproduction

A wide variety of Orioles live throughout Isekai including the Orchard Oriole (Icterus draconus) and the Northern Oriole (Icterus nordei). Many more variations of Oriole exist throughout the world, but the largest difference between the subspecies is the various patterns that appear on their bodies. Songbirds that are gold or bright orange in color are often referred to as Orioles because of their common coloration.

Ecology & Habitats

These creatures live in a variety of locations throughout the world. No matter their subspecies, all Orioles are migratory birds and will follow the seasons. The warmer areas of the world, including
the Cradle of Clay, the Great Plains, the Elven Forest, the Sunset Fields, and the Forest of Mytos, are the most common summer locations of these birds. During the colder months, the Zóni are the preferred locations.
Oriole
Orioles are known for their brightly colored chests which are often gold or orange in color. Depending on the variant of Oriole, the bird may be almost entirely bright-colored or only have a few feathers that stand out when they sing.
