Anura | World Anvil - Isekai Codex

Isekai has started its grand restructuring! Please bear with us as things move around and get situated in their new home.
Names are also in the process of changing, so some names are inconsistent currently.

Anura

Toad Folk

The sounds of the swamp are pierced by deep throaty croaks as an alarm is sounded and weapons are grabbed from their stands. Few dare wander this deep into the humid swamps, the trees and brush too thick for most to traverse easily. Those that live tucked away here trust few, even others of their own kind, but their pause can be bought, for a price safety can be earned here.   The Anura are a fierce and dangerous race of the Animal Kingdom, it is said that they were once charged with seeking out the murky waters of the swampland for things of evil and malice that would grow but long ago they fell victim to the corruption that evil brought. Their role in the Eldritch War was antagonistic as they cared not for the tales or demonstrations of grand destruction around them. In fact, they began to think that they were meant to worship and be subservient to these interplanar invaders and would often be a stumbling block to forces moving through their lands during the war. They are known for being aggressive trappers, ambushers, and extremely distrustful of all that enter their homeland. The Anura populate warmer swamps and areas partially submerged in water with the most prominent population being on the Southern Continent where they are often targeted as an easy food source by the Lizardfolk.   Currently, their native homeland can be identified as the Moorlands of the Northern Continent or the Greenflows of the Southern Continent where they live in densely grown jungles with no lack of water or places to hide and build their villages in. Anura do not typically have large kingdoms or societies, they function in a highly territorial tribal society where they mark borders even between their own kind with constant guards and totems that are meant to stand as a warning against outsiders. They also have a strict caste system that dictates the station of tribe members from birth based upon their birth markings and coloration, this decides everything from social standing to occupation and is almost impossible to change within the tribe.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Anura share most anatomical traits with Humans but have a much smaller body structure with powerful legs to enable jumping, a skin that is toxic to the touch, and a dependency on water immersion. They have skin colorations and birth markings similar to that of several poisonous forms throughout the world. In place of Human fingers and toes, the Anura will generally have four fingers or toes where webbing is often common to see and these appendages are long with several joints that allow them to freely climb most surfaces with ease so long as they can find any ridges to hold at all. The final and most notable trait of the Anura is the versatility of their natural poison. This is a quality that gives them a natural additive to any piercing weaponry that they choose to wield while the raw form causes those that make skin-to-skin contact to fall victim to its poison. This natural poison also gives the Anura an immunity to almost all known poisons and toxins, short of becoming magically poisoned, an Anura is immune to naturally or forcefully being poisoned.   Common Colorations
Anura share the colors of many poisonous frogs throughout Isekai. Their skin can range from bright colors to browns while their eyes are often very bright and stand out. In many cases, the Anura often seem to be giant frogs due to their coloration.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Anura can be found throughout Isekai, but most frequently in areas of warm swamps and jungles. Most Anura chose to live on the Southern Continent where the swamps are warmer and more humid and the landscape allows them to better hide their villages from outsiders and others of their kind. These people are very solitary, choosing to rarely or never interact with others outside their own village.   Culturally, the Anura do not believe in kingdoms or any other ruling structure outside of the caste system that is currently in place. This system is dictated by an Anura's birth markings and colorations to determine one's profession and place within society. There is no possibility for upward mobility as it is believed that this system and one's place in it is necessary to care for and protect the homeland they have.   Anura are extremely distrustful of outsiders and have been known to kill or greatly injure outsiders on sight without question. If an outsider can prove their worth to the tribe or can offer a significant monetary gift, it is possible that an outsider will be welcomed into the village, only so long as they still hold worth for the Anura.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Anura are not known to have inherently mystical abilities, their traits are focused on physical aspects and have to do with their Anuran physiology. This species has no known sub-species but there is an incredible amount of variety within their birth markings and colorations even within the same tribe. All Anura will have anatomy that favors areas with water, their body requires complete immersion in water in order to avoid drying out and incurring significant and dangerous dehydration. They are also built in a way that emphasizes dexterity and agility, their small frames allow them to make incredible jumps and climb on precariously flimsy supports without fear. The uniting features that span across all examples of Anura are brightly colored markings or complete skin shades, toxic skin, and a dependency on water that makes life in dry climates perilous if not impossible. They are capable of jumping great distances from a resting position, breathing both air and water, with small bodies that seldom weigh more than 30 or 40 pounds at their heaviest which also makes them ill-suited for one on one combat with most species.

Their laws are really interesting. I'm very intrigued by the song.
