Why did our forefathers even settle this frozen rock? Is there something incredibly important here that we don't know about or were they simply bored and out of things to colonise.— Vila Erásra
Heli is an arctic planet that was once used as a mining colony by the
Toro-Ki Miners' Commune, a radical socialist organisation that sought to overthrow the capitalist
Federal Union of Ryel. The colony was established far away from the core heartlands of the old federal union as it was supposed to remain a secret. Nonetheless, someone had found the planet at some point, and when they did so, they showed no mercy to her inhabitants.
Victims of the War
Despite their grandiose aspirations of freeing the world from what they perceived to be capitalist oppression, the Toro-Ki weren't ready for any sort of armed conflict. When
the Containment War started, they lacked the technology to identify the vessels that were beginning a planetary blockade of Heli. By the time they had repaired one of their planetary defence cannons, the bombardment had begun. A total of three shots were taken against the hostile fleet, but before a fourth one could be taken, a missile had landed right on top of their only battle-ready weapon. With their main defences destroyed and their mining towns already in ruins, the attackers launched their KtG-48c probes to the surface, unleashing a deadly plague upon the survivors.
Once the last of the missiles crashed into an apartment complex and the dead stopped piling up, all that remained of the once peaceful colony were the shattered ruins of the brutalist concrete buildings and the few hardy men and women who had survived the nightmare. Just like with people on other such worlds, they lost much of their knowledge. Essential gadgets and tools were no longer possible to create without the necessary supplies they imported from other worlds and so the knowledge to make them was lost. Scavenging became a vital occupation for humanity's survival.
