Malusite Material in Emore | World Anvil

Malusite

Malusite is a small crystal material that has been harnessed by Arcanum Noctus for its strange property of detecting Weird and Magik. It is unknown why these properties have been bestowed onto the crystals, or where they have come from.   There are many clear indications that Malusite is related directly to Weird, even generating its own field of powerful energy that is undetectable by other crystals of Malusite. From my research, this seems to indicate that they produce a shared field for a specific kind of Weird energy. It seems unlikely that it would be as simple as that, though I try to imagine it could be.
I never knew this crystal had a name. I've seen and used it in a Weird Detector, but never considered it as a material outisde of that.

Usage

I have very few sources that can identify the full history of Malusite within and outwith Arcanum Noctus. There seems to be a couple very early reports that the first use of Malusite was as a power source for an early device built by Architects. This device was designed to contain sources of Weird and Magik, at the same time it was said to alledgedly source the phenomena's origins. This first device was about the size of a small room and contained several large deposites of Malusite. When set up and focused in an area, this device created a powerful stream of lights that required several large documents to translate into words.   There are a small number of reports that some phenomena were traced using this device and writings that indicate at least one instance where a lycanthrope was contained successfully using the device. While the authenticity of the writings cannot be verified I have discovered some of the documents used to translate the device. They are easily several hundreds of pages long each. If I find a way I will share some of the pages with you, though the instructions and translations seem to be confusing without the original device in front of you.

A document found that seems to display initial designs for the second version of a Weird Detector including small fragments of Malusite. I will have an Architect i'm close with explain what everything means in the diagram as soon as I'm able.
By 1834 CY, the first implementation of a Weird Detector was invented, this was the size of a fairly large tome. The machine itself was a large box of mechanical components that would take a reading from a seperated probe. The probe, according to my documentation, contained a piece of Malusite that would emit a small field of electricity that would travel up a cable towards the reader. The reader contained several strange components that I will need to research further, but reading these documents seems to indicate that a set of lights would indicate a value of Weird in an area. While more portable than earlier devices, this version of the Weird Detector alledgedly had several major defects that led to several early Collectives experiencing near fatal accidents.   As of 1895 CY, the design for the Weird Detector has changed drastically to include a more solidified piece of Malusite that itself acts as the detector producing an output to a 'plastic diffusal face'. It is clear from the writings that this version was always intended to be wrist mounted for easy storage and access in comparison to the previous version. The Malusite gave the face a variable glow of a blue-ish color based on the amount of Weird and Magik that it detected, allowing for judgements to be made based on how bright the glow is.   Recent developments with Malusite have occured in the past decade. There have been writings which suggest that Malusite can be used as an alternative power source as a type of electricity generation. While this is unconfirmed, untested, and highly dangerous to attempt, if the writings and blueprints that I have turn out to be accurate, then there is a high chance that Malusite could drastically change how we produce electricity.

Discovery

The discovery of Malusite stems to the earliest days of Arcanum Noctus. I have a report saying that it was in the first decade of cases. A Collective gathered information about a phenomena occuring around a manorhouse in the country. Apparently the owner was a member of Arcanum and found these strange glowing rocks that appeared and disappeared at random times. When harvested, Malusite was found to be in the rocks. That seems to be where the report ends, the rest of the file is redacted from my eyes.

Ohh cool material! It says it probably creates its own weird field that is undetectable by other detectors, that leaves space for a type of weird that cannot be detected...

So strange. So odd. So cool. I wanna do experiments with it. I wanna poke it with the science equivalent of every stick. I love it.

Shiny Cystals, gotta love 'em. Just make sure to credit all your artwork, even if self made. I would have loved to see a little more about the dangers, what happens if destroyed or disturbed? Also the color feeld fitting an the glow in the dark itself is spooky.

It is on my to do list for the articles, a lot of the content was written during Summer Camp. I'm working on it as soon as I'm able!
