Terris Blight

The Terris blight is something The Displaced have have to deal with since before the city was founded.

Like all the strange inconsistanceis of this place, we don't know the true nature of the blight... just the symptoms...

Transmission & Vectors

The blight has been found in the food grown in the natural soil of Ard'Vanwa. It's unknown what the nature of it is, but it seems to be in the food itself.

This does not just affect plants, but animals as well.

Causes

Everyone has speculations as to the origin of the blight. Was it a disease that was displaced, and now has infected the soil?

Was it something that naturally grew in this realm, or is it the result of something the very ground lacks, that causes plants and animals to weaken and suffer?

Symptoms

Symptoms are manageable but unpleasant.

Indigestion, nausea, stomach cramps, and listlessness is the main symptoms of blight, but the longer you eat the food... the worse you feel.

No one has died from it that we have known, but it has caused the deaths of those who tried to live in the woods and were too weak to escape the monstrosities that live in the woods.

One of the telling symptoms of blight is an almost insatiable appetite, though no weight gain will occur.

Eyes will yellow, and the body becomes gaunt and malnourished, no matter how much food and water you consume.

Treatment

Treating the blight is simple... just eat food that's not blight infected.

The odd thing is once clerics could purify food and water, the blight cleared up.

No one is known to have died from it, yet the longer it affects you, the weaker and more incoherent you feel as it drains you of all your energy.

It takes a severely blight-infected individual about three weeks of clean rations to clear up and regain full strength.

Prognosis

Anyone eating untreated food will be affected by this. It doesn't show up right away, and eating untreated food and water constantly for a month or so is when symptoms start to occur.

Sequela

There are no known permanent long term effects, which is why it's assumed to be a lack of nutrients in the soil that the food is unable to secure proper nutrition... or it could be some essential energy or life force that is lacking in this realm, and that energy does not translate into the food, causing it to taste bland, and off tastings.

Affected Groups

There are many affected by the blight, it's often seen in animals that are hunted, though once purified and cooked, they are just as eatable as unaffected individuals.

Hosts & Carriers

Research into the blight has shown it to infect both flora and fauna. We're not sure if it's in the soil or the air, because it affects everything. We do know that its transmission is through consumption.

Prevention

Prevention is simple, with the Church of Worship, all clerics who are able to cast spells are assigned to the farms and will purify the crops before consumption.

Epidemiology

We're not sure how it spreads or moves, it's all over the island, and seems to permit the very soil.

History

When the first settlers tried to tame the lands, the blight became more apparent as farming became normal.

Terris Burg was just a small village with a wooden wall to protect ourselves from the outside, but the halflings who dedicated their time and work to grow the few seeds we have been able to salvage seemed quite optimistic about the output of food we'll be able to secure once the first few harvests happen.

This was only really able to work, due to some enchanted decanter that pours unlimited water that was discovered during a salvage run.

The blight became noticeable weeks after securing a steady supply of food. The halflings took to the woods and would bring back various game meats and other fruits, berries, and anything else they could find.

The more we ate, the worse we felt.

Lethargy set in, everyone felt their life draining from them. Simple tasks felt like too much to do... it was a pain not in your body, but mind and spirit as well, you just felt empty and drained, your skin and hair yellow and lose color, and your skin sags as your muscles atrophy and waste away. Bones become brittle and your whole body breaks down due to the lack of nutrients.

During a salvage run, another magical artifact was discovered... a chalice to some unknown god, that can purify food and water. The spell can work in a 5ft radius and is useable only once a week.

Since the clerics of the city were cut off from their gods, this was the only divine relic that has been found that was this powerful. They were unsure of the number of charges it may contain, if the artifact is cut off from its divine source, it may run out of power.

The people of the small community piled a massive five-foot cube worth of food and water in the center of town, and one of the more experienced clerics cast the spell. After that test, the halflings tore down the food tower and got to work on a village-wide feast to test the purified food.

Over the next few weeks, it was discovered that eating the purified food restored a person back to their original state, and cures the symptoms of the blight.

Sadly, the artifact did have a limited number of charges.

The city council decided to blend the blight and purified food together to try and save its power, and that worked, as it lessened the blight's effects, but still made people feel like crap.

It wasn't untill the Church of Worship made their contact with the The Quiet One that the blight plage was resolved.

With the Church of Worship now able to cast rank 1 clerical spells, Terris Burg now had an army of casters who can purify tonnes of food, daily.

Cultural Reception

No one talks about the blight, now that the clerics are able to purify the food. Most people in the town put it out of their minds and those who suffered the blight refuse to talk about their ordeal, per the Terris Burg City Council orders.
