The Mudlarks

Riverside treasure hunters

The Mudlarks are riverside treasure hunters dotted along the River Laurel in Capstone city. When the tide goes out, the Mudlarks (or 'Muddies') wade out along the muddy shores to search for treasure washed up from the city.   Mudlarks have keen eyes and pick odd shaped objects out of the mud. Common finds include smoking pipes, shiny buttons and coins but occasionally Muddies have found jewelery, discarded weapons and sometimes human bones.   They often attach elaborate tales and stories of origin to their found items in order to sell them on for a ridiculously high price, but sometimes they find genuine artefacts from the Dark Age or earlier, as a lot of debris fell into the river during the monumental Fires of Capstone during the beginning of the First Age.

Assets

Who knows what the river will reveal? Most mudlarks are well equipped with leather boot-trousers so that their shoes don't get lost in the muddy banks. They have one gloved hand for digging and scraping about in the muck, and one bare hand for carefully handling things. Each mudlark will carry two bags, one for tiny trinkets and coins to be cleaned so they don't get lost, and one larger bag for any significant finds that are hand-sized or larger.

History

The most legendary find acclaimed to the mudlarks was the recovery of Candor's Mace, found on the banks of the River Laurel towards the old ruins of Talan Castle. The mace is now cleaned and restored to The Royal Melesian Guard, which was presented it to the Captain as a prestigious award for her service to the country.
