Nyara River

Geography

Rapidly flowing east from Nyara's Peaks to the Narrow Sea, the Nyara River is the primary source of freshwater for the Eastmarches. Upon its shores rests Somae, seat of House Thewisy, the Keepers of the Eastmarches. At its easternmost point, where it meets the Narrow Sea as a mighty waterfall, is Imgreshold, the foremost fortress guarding Anhara from the tribes of the Julfar Savanna.

Taming the Nyara

The Nyara is a broad, slow river. In its northern reaches - above Somae - it is swampy, and at high tide in particular becomes more of a lagoon. The location of Somae itself may have been chosen as it was the first area of dry land sufficiently broad to build upon. Beginning at Somae and extending downriver in some locations, the Nyara was embanked, particularly to put an end to the dangerous mosquitos festering on the shores.   The area around the Nyara's banks is peaty, water-logged, and festering with insects and malodorous plant life. It is fed by an uncountable multitude of small creeks. Some of these have been covered over, such as Sunken Street in Somae, others infilled and utterly destroyed. Even more, particularly those in the Ashfields, were once navigable.   To combat the high tide and disease, the Thewisys constructed - around the time of their acquiring the whole of the Eastmarches - the Greater & Lesser Embankments. The Greater along the northern, and Lesser upon the southern, shore - these structures are both the main east-west roads as well as defensive measures against the tide.
