You hit the dwarf in the shoulder. “What did you do THAT for!??”
Dorbane shrugs, “Was just playing the part. No harm done.”
“You broke his finger!”
“He’s got nine more, what’s all the fuss about?”
Valda rolls her eyes.
This is not going as planned. None of this is.
“Fine,” you say reluctantly, trying to stay calm and in control, “then thrash him until he tells us what we need to know.”
The Kutollum grins deviously. “THAT’S what I like to hear!!”
“WAIT!” the youth cries, “I was hired by Gunther and Keelan—the two men. The two real soldiers from Andilain!”
He looks frantically between the three of you.
“They gave me silver! I’m just a farmer—and without my dad,…” his lips tremble, “I’m just trying to take care of my mother…and they said I just had to stand around in a uniform, so people don’t ask questions. It was so much money. No one said anything about kidnapping!”
He nods in the direction of the hostages. “When I heard they were gonna kill them, I ran.” He looks at you, pleadingly, “As fast as I could—but Gunther there,” his eyes look to the dead soldier on the ground, “caught me and brought me back. Said if I ran again, he’d kill me!”
“Liar!” screams Dorbane, bearing his teeth and raising his axe high.
