Follow the Trail #4

“Let’s check this out,” you say quietly. Stealthily moving across the road and up to the ridge, you stop and check the tree line for signs of life. The three of you then crawl up to the peak and look down into the trees.
The forest is dense, but Valda taps you on the shoulder. She points northwest. There’s a path through the brush, made by a body being dragged along the ground.
“Not exactly the brightest candle, now is he?” whispers Dorbane sarcastically. You have to smile.
“Spread out,” you whisper, “I’ll walk the path.”
Both Dorbane and Valda nod and slip over the ridge, vanishing into the shadows of the trees.
Luckily there’s enough moonlight to discern your general whereabouts. You slowly, cautiously, make your way through the forest for several minutes, until you hear a voice.
You can’t see either of your friends, so you crouch low, making your way through the underbrush as quietly as possible.
You can see a flicker of light in the distance.
A fire.
