Wild Glass Material in Ultima Thule | World Anvil

Wild Glass

A phenomenon exclusive in the Western Provinces is a material called "Wild Glass", in certain areas of the desert a material can form in basins that is essentially a form of naturally growing glass or hard crystal. It is usually found in various shades of yellow in lumps the size of a fist up to the size of a person.   It can be chipped and polished into jewelery or if very carefully prepared can be shaved and cracked into the sharpest blades the Empire has seen. The Emperor himself is said to carry a gladius made of a single shard of Wild Glass, a gift from the Legatus of the XVth Legion.   Now in the West they are experimenting with this crystal in new and exciting ways. Expert smiths have determined a way to shave off layers of the crystal into ultra sharp shards, so much so that they slice through thick leather and skin as if it was merely paper. To this end some of the legions have been equipped with experimental wild-glass tipped pilum. The weight of the thrown weapon is enough to pierce armour, add in the tip of wild-glass and it can slice through anything.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Pale smoky yellow colour, found in smooth weathered pebbles ranging from the size of a fist to the size of a person. These are gathered up and then can be carefully cut into workable pieces, sides that are exposed to the wind tend to have a smoky appearance, sides freshly cut tend to be shiny and show that the inner stone is clear through with a yellow haze.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Usually feels cool to the touch and feels very heavy. It is more often than not incredibly smooth all over, this is attributed to the weathering effects of the desert in which it is found.

Geology & Geography

Only found in the deepest parts of the deserts of the Western Provinces, typically where rain collects suggesting it is more of a crystal than actual glass.

Mm, glass-tipped pilum... I like it! Is this stuff like obsidian and generally jammed into a supporting structure, like Macuahuitl with Obsidian? Or is it more fantastical and more comparable to iron/steel?

It's just common glass really, akin to the Macuahuitl. But they've figured out how to socket it into a wooden pilum quite well.

Macuahuitl are just about the coolest weapon there is, so I definitely approve of that. :)

This is interesting. Could the larger pieces be made thin enough to use as windows or something similar? Would be cool to see a temple or some such with a bunch of crystal windows...

That is a great idea, given in thanks to the gods of the desert!

I really like this kind of rare fancy material. I bet people could even fight for it. This is really an inspiration for me, thanks !

[scientist]Is wild glass formed by superheated sand?[/scientist]. The geologist in me loves seeing any rock-based material to be honest and this is a great addition to that particular collection :)

I haven't actually got an answer for that, I'm leaning more towards it being more of a crystal than glass, in that it has formed from deposits leached out of water...
