Sakula

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Sakula is a cold, unforgiving northern nation in Sakru, rumored to be autonamous inside the The Bafigron Empire and is perpetually locked in an eternal winter. For centuries, its snow has never melted, and the icy chill is matched only by the oppressive sense of dread that permeates the land. However, the harsh environment pales in comparison to the cruelty of its rulers. Sakula has long been governed by the The White Witches, descendants of the fearsome crone.   These witches answer to their queen, which are rumored to be the daughter of a witch from Wych Lands of Hexadömonir or as some people refer to them, the White Witches.

Structure

The Seven Riders
Before the Witch from Hexadömonir return every century, they are seven Riders, who travel across Irrisen to evaluate the loyalty of its people. Presumed to be representing different aspects ofs magical power, these riders reward loyal subjects with boons while punishing or destroying those who show disloyalty.

Culture

Symbols play a crucial role in Sakula’s culture, believed to offer protection from the Witch or her daughters. Common motifs include cats, dogs, gates, and trees, which are often carved into homes and personal items. Cats, dogs, and ravens are kept as pets due to their perceived protective and noble qualities, while crows are universally distrusted and killed on sight.

History

Sakula’s history as a semi-autonomous nation began in 389 AB, when its lands were wrested from Majestic Kingdom of Keatis. That year brought an especially brutal winter, and with it, Witch armies which came via Weird Magic. Composed of cold fey and blue-skinned ice trolls, their forces swept through the regions with terrifying speed. Led by 'supposedly' the The White Witches themselves, the invasion was nearly unstoppable—those who resisted were slaughtered, while the rest were enslaved. It took only 23 days for White Witches to seize control of the territory that would become Sakula.

Cycles of Queens

Demography and Population

The people of Sakula primarily descend from two groups: the once-enslaved Ufrin brought by and the distant descendants of former queens and Bafigronian who were mostly cast outside of the main society. Regardless of their lineage, most citizens outwardly profess loyalty to the White Witches, though this may stem more from fear than genuine reverence. The harsh, frozen conditions keep most of Irrisen’s people isolated, with few daring to leave or visit. They primarily focus on subsistence farming, growing the few crops that can survive the eternal winter.
