Seari Calendar in The Wellspring Dragons | World Anvil

Seari Calendar

All Seari calendars are based on a very ancient one most religions believe was created at the same time the Earth Mother brought the world Elthessera into being. The mythical dragons who helped the Earth Mother in her creation efforts used it to keep track of seasonal changes. This makes the calendar a sacred object, and when governments attempt to change it, the religious rise up and protest.

Weekdays are in Daione, the language of the Condi. This is a holdover from the days of the Jonna Empire. The translations and pronunciations are below:   gah-zhee; Earth Day
  za-zhee: Green(root) Day
  shen-zhee: Water Day
  ven-zhee: Ice Day
  khan-zhee: Fire Day
  jih-kay-zhee: Air Day
  thaw-zhee: Mystery Day
  nah-vah-zhee: Light Day

BGI = Before Ga Iniria   AGI = After Ga Iniria   Greater Seasons are divided into two Lesser Seasons. Each Lesser Season has thirty-two days, with each day having 32 hours. Most Lesser Seasons are referred to using the last word in their name, except for First Young and Iced Breath, though it is becoming more common to truncate Iced Breath to “Breath”. Muddy Wetlands is nicknamed “Muddy Squish”, “Muddy”, or “Squish”.   Normal date reference: Buds 1 Ghazhioh. It’s redundant, but that’s how it is.   Weeks are called eight-days.   The seasons are named in local languages. The original monikers were in the sacred dragon language called Chabool, and common usage of those holy words fell out of favor eons ago.   A leap day happens every 8 years, and is added to Muddy Wetlands. It is referred to as Everzhioh, or Dark Day. It is a frightening day, since several dark cults believe it their most sacred day, and some of their rites are murderous and destructive. This is somewhat mitigated by light cults using the day to celebrating Ceaque, Aseris’ beloved, who is the embodiment of shadows and a gentle darkness.

Days are named in Daione, after the Abysses. Abysses are very important in Seari myth, since they cradle the essenses of sylfaodolon, recharge magick, and harbor the spirits of the dead. The Abysses are named after the general types of magick, and since the first magick was Earth magick, it is the first day of the eight-day. The other days are named in the order of when the magick associated with them appeared.   Dark magick does not appear in the names of the week, instead replaced by general 'mystery arts'. As the Condi are proud Lightartists, they decided not to include Dark references in their weekdays, and due to the influence of the Jonna Empire on Seari culture, their preference has stuck.
