Eteilon Character in The Wellspring Dragons | World Anvil

Eteilon

Eteilon is King Shiel's staunchest supporter. She prides herself in being his closest adviser, and destroys any who attempt to interfere with their relationship. This has caused numerous court problems, but she has weathered them better than most nobles anticipated. The confrontations have left her bitter and resentful, and Shiel's affection does not mitigate the emotional pain of retaliation and dislike.   She prefers to plot and scheme, her way of helping keep Shiel in power. She has several allies though no friends, and their mutual reliance only promotes court status rather than respect for one another. After witnessing the betrayal of Shiel by his uncle, she considers close and friendly associations liabilities.

Early Years

Eteilon is the third child of Lord Backent and Lady Respona, rural barons with little royal court influence. She grew up without the trappings of wealth many others her age indulged in, instead finding satisfaction in learning how to fight. Her mother claimed she was born with a sword in her hand, for she began to train with one long before she began her academic education. It defined her to all who knew her.   She studied her chosen weapon diligently, and outshone most of the other students she trained with. She found academic disciplines boring and uninspiring, and while she did well in the subjects, she blew off her schooling as soon as she was able. Her exasperated parents sent her to Shayd, hoping she could find something other than the fighting arts to interest her. She joined the palace guard initiates program instead, and despite the sexism, fought her way up the initiate ranks. When she was tapped as personal guard for Shiel, she ignored the laughter and jumped at the opportunity. The prince was not the spoiled royal she expected, and their mutual respect led to a deeper relationship. She was his bodyguard and his lover, and she fought every threat, real or imaginary, to keep it that way.

Illenan Civil War

Her fury at Eder and his supporters refuses to die. She fought with vicious intent at Shiel's side, and intercepted numerous assassination attempts paid for by his uncle. She began to look at loyal Shiel supporters with suspicion, for she could not always tell who might wish him harm. It affected her relationships with everyone but her liege and Iavan, a man who forsook his family to support his cousin. She respected his loyalty, and managed to work with him when she rubbed everyone else the wrong way. Her advice concerning Eder's actions led to more than one victory on the battlefield.   Sikode's arrival garnered her suspicion, and her extreme dislike after his defeat of Eder's wielder. He had managed to turn the tide of the civil war with one act, while she had fought and killed and seemed to make no headway. It irritated her greatly, though she privately felt relief that the Rakan's presence ensured Shiel's safety.   She believes Shiel should have exiled or executed everyone who supported his uncle, instead of providing them a chance to ingratiate themselves to king and court. She sees it as a weakness on his part, and does her best to undermine their influence.

Merren

After the civil war victory, Shiel's dreams became hers. They motivated her in a way nothing else in her life had. When he decided to invade Merren, she eagerly followed his lead. She understood, better than nearly every other Illenan, the drive to swallow power that inspired the despot, and her advice proved invaluable in his defeat. Her viciousness on the battlefield earned her a reputation of hardness and mercilessness, and few wished to end up on her bad side. She anticipated the instances of noble rebellion against Illena's continued presence, and protects Cilair because Shiel wishes it.   She supports her liege's dream of empire, since she believes royals are little more than power-hungry wealth-hoarders without the wit or wisdom to effectively rule. She has begun to solidify Illenan support for the cause. She takes the opportunity to convince Shiel to send Sikode to Soline as a spy, effectively getting him out of everyday contact with the king.

Skills

Eteilon is an exceptional swordswoman. Her abilities garner envy from lesser fighters. Her bravery in defense of her king is known throughout Illena and Merren.   She understands malicious and depraved intent and can form exacting plans to defeat those who conspire against Shiel. Her cynicism concerning human interactions has kept her and her liege alive.
