Mirror, Mirror

A defense against lack of decorum.

Mirror, Mirror is a Spell that originated in the 1800s. The spell was first utilized by a landed member of high society. The spell focuses on defense against firearms.   The spell does not see as much use as one would expect. Mirror, Mirror requires the practitioner's catalyst, the means of casting spells in Arcana Discordia , to be completely detached from the practitioner's person, taking away their ability to use more powerful spells.     Those who use another spell in the Genre, The Cheat Code, are among the few who use Mirror, Mirror. While focusing on using their weapon, their catalyst will protect them from incoming fire.

Casting The Spell

The spell is simple and requires little effort on the part of the caster, but it does require a sustained amount of concentration. No matter how small the effort is, on a long enough timeline, the spell will tire the caster.     The first step is to activate the catalyst. Flipping a lucky coin, drawing a card or on occasion hurling the full deck, or simply tossing dice into the air are all examples. Ms. Dormer would spin the mirror to the other side to activate it. The caster will focus The Static into a bubble around the catalyst and then run through the details of the spell in their mind.   The details are short and simple, a necessity to make sure the spell can be cast as quickly and efficiently as possible. These details are essentially commands. Block incoming projectiles, reflect them into enemies.

Effect:
When cast, the catalyst will float around the caster, prepared to ricochet any projectiles that will hit the caster. It will ignore any projectile that is guaranteed to miss, prioritizing what it will reflect back onto enemies within a twenty foot radius.

What's in a name?

Jane Dormer, the inventor of the spell, grew up with classic fairy tales. Her particular favorite was snow white. Jane felt far more connection to the queen than the protagonist, believing that snow white was secretly a devil in disguise sent to drive the queen mad, as snow white was not the fairest in the land for some time, taking the Queen's title with "suspiciously abrubt and needless provocation."   This connection to the fairy tale is why Jane decided to use a hand mirror in the first place, and when she named the spell, she had no way of knowing whether it could be used with any other object.

Limits and Restrictions:

  • Deflection: The deflection can only hit targets within a 180° arc of the catalyst, as the catalyst will not reflect in the direction of the caster behind it. Furthermore, the more projectiles threatening the caster, the less it will be able to catch.

  • Effort: While durability of the catalyst isn't a problem, a major limit is the effort it takes to reflect high velocity projectiles. Every bullet reflected will take its toll on the caster.

  • Velocity: Any projectile with a velocity of less than 1000 feet per second and a size larger than the catalyst itself cannot be reflected. For reference, the average bullet travels at 2500 feet per second and arrows travel at 250 feet per second on average.

  • Usage: This spell must be used on a. catalyst. The catalyst must be activated and cannot deflect until the activation, and casting of the spell is completed.

  • Ammo Type: certain forms ammunition or projectile will not be efficiently deflected. Explosives won't be deflected, as the catalyst will hover within 10 feet of the caster and can't block the explosion. Incendiary ammunition can still cause damage to the caster, setting them on fire if deflected at the wrong time.

Shotgun shells are another example. Since their are significantly more projectiles, all fired simultaneously, the catalyst will only block the most important areas of the caster.

History

The shear rage on his face brought a contemptuous smile to hers. He was still, a handsome man stuck on his knees as if his body forgot how to stand.
Jane spoke slowly, the nature of her previous answer may have escaped him, her protest far too hastily made, "Mr. Arden," she began,"you puzzle me exceedingly. If what I have hitherto said can appear to you in the form of encouragement, I know not how to express my refusal in such a way as may convince you of its being one."
He managed to stand. He stared at her, a quickly suppressed moment of uncomfortable intent rising as quickly as it was forced back down...

The spell was invented by a member of the English aristocracy, Jane Dormer. Jane Dormer failed the rite, found herself in The House of Cards, and became a discordian. She then spent much of her life causing trouble among the landed gentry.     She routinely spoke her mind. She pointed out the problems with the way the upper class live. This made her many enemies, and in response to an attempt on her life, she developed a simple spell that utilized luck in the most peculiar of ways.   A young gentleman found himself ridiculed, scolded for proposing marriage to Mrs. Dormer when they barely knew one another. She was shot and nearly died during recovery. Her only way of passing the time was to find a way to never experience the sad chain of events again.

Development

Ms. Dormer used an ornate dual sided mirror as a catalyst. One side would reflect the world as it was, the other reflected the world as it could be. Jane Dormer was an expert on causality, and when she developed the spell, she used The Causality Theorem exclusively.     Her theory stated that "The Silence," a Victorian term that described what is now called "The Static," could be used to protect the catalyst in a bubble, which would be enough to stop a bullet. She then used causality to give a pseudo sentient quality to the mirror, allowing it to move on its own and put itself in between an incoming bullet and Ms. Dormer.   When the spell is cast, the mirror would hover around her, catching projectiles which would ricochet off the bubble of static she produced. This gave her another idea, and she further enhanced the spell to ricochet the bullets towards anyone who wished her harm with an effective range of 20 feet.

"The shear rage on his face brought a contemptuous smile to hers." I believe you meant 'sheer'.   If I understand correctly, casting this spell requires temporary suspension of all of the caster's other discordian abilities? So, say, you can't have a quantum revolver and this at the same time?   Other than the counters you have in place, such as bows and shotguns, I can think of one other way to overcome the barrier: It only protects a 180 degree arc, so what if another discordian were able to ricochet a bullet off of the wall behind the user and hit them in the back? same principle with a spell that can originate from an area that the caster can see. (BTW, how's this spell for fending off fireballs or lightning bolts?)   If you detonate a shrapnel bomb next to the caster, does the catalyst block it like it would the shotgun?   Also, the story tidbit reminds me of Elizabeth Bennet refusing Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice, except this guy at least looks tolerable on the outside.   If you cast the spell on a roll of quarters all at once, could they act independently and eliminate the weakness to shotguns?   I keep forgetting that this isn't just a defensive spell, but it comes with it's own counterattack. That makes it so much more practical. What if the bullet hitting the mirror was actually just the bullet going into the portal to the mirror dimension and the mirror bullet coming out to hit the shooter?

yes i meant sheer XD as far as their abilities, yes and no. some that dependent on the catalyst will be suspended, but others not so much. really depends and nothing says you cant have more than one catalyst. The gun would not be able to use the spell, but another item could while you use the gun.   that spell would work, and there are many ways of doing it, the main problem is that even if the bullet moves around the 180 degree barrier, the catalyst can just move to intercept. that would be like a battle of whos luckier if it were two discordians XD shrapnel would work similar to a shotgun, but the blast of the bomb is a factor as well. cant block that. fireballs depends on size, but moving out of the way is better if it has explosive tendencies and a lightning bolt could be blocked, though the catalyst may need to either ground itself or be may made of metal. not entirely sure on that one. may need to think.     Nice catch, pride and prejudice is an all time favorite of mine, the quote she says is literally word for word i think, the surrounding text being different. its what elizabeth says to collins but i wager you knew that XD   you can have more than one, a roll of quarters is possible .   The mirror dimension is another way you could do it, and also makes this a spell one could use in other genres, one thing though, Gotta be careful with mirrors in The Web. Storytellers know more than most, but a magic mirror associated with dimensions can make quire a few feel uneasy. No one wants to come face to face with The man in the mirror.

As for Pride and Prejeduce, I don;t know the book that well, just the Colin firth miniseries.   That last bit reminded me of the Michael Jackson song. Now I want a quest that starts with the man in the mirror and asking him to change his ways.
