Revenants Species in The Future is Now | World Anvil

Revenants

A sentient cognitive parasite. They are dangerous, contagious, without form. All we know is that they are Revenants.
The Future is Now is a cheesy sci-fi setting set in a nonsense universe where humans were exterminated without a trace eons ago and are long forgotten. The only remnants of humanity is that it's culture survived in a universe full of humanaboos.

Authors Note: This is a one off article, normally the setting is light hearted; while this article is more serious in tone, it is not indicative of future articles, although Revenants may have cameos in future short stories. Revenants are an anomaly to the point of being myths, and as such, does not affect the overall tone of the setting in universe.

If you want to know what the setting is usually like check out the Barkanoids!

First Contact

What in The Kings' name are those things?! Why do they even exist in this universe?!
— First Contact with Revenants
We've known about them for centuries. They're rare, elusive, and impossible to detect until it's too late. We know little to nothing about them and the universe at large believe they're just myths or cover stories. The below is highly classified information, it is the universe's collective knowledge on these "Revenants."

Transcript for above audio log.
This is Engineer Car'dale of the USCSS Nostromo, reproduction model 17. It's been 12 lunar cycles since our penetration drive malfunctioned.

That's not all, something happened to the crew, they're just … gone. Even the Barkanoid … oh gods … Poptart … she was such a good captain. I never paid attention to her when she talked about the Old Masters … I just … I hope I go wherever she went.
[…]
Damn it, we were just running a King to his concert and now even he's gone. Poor Hound Dog, this will be the first time you're late to an concert. Moon of Rikon 4 and 5 ... Gods … it was sold out in nanoseconds. 2 moons filled with people waiting for you, it made me feel so small. I've never seen you disappoint a fan before and I guess you won't either.
[…]
Hold up. What was that?! Oh gods. What's happened to that window? The walls are they getting closer. Oh gods, They're closing in. This is real.

They're real! What was it's name? What did Dun'ler say? Oh gods I need to remember.
Revenant?
Damn, that's not it's name.
Revenant .
It's not Revenant!
It's not Revenant.
— Data drive from Engineer Car'dale's auditory implant. Confirmed deceased; cause of death, severe Trauma, crushing.

Capabilities

We didn't understand them, didn't even know where they came from. We couldn't control them, so in desperation we contained them. What if they break free? With their power, hatred, paranoia, then the universe will be silenced. A silence that has never been heard before.
— Data slab found on a derelict alien ship of unknown origins.
We know very few about Revenants, the extent of their capabilities, physiology, or even motives but this is what we currently know about them.

Supernatural Abilities

If we can't kill it by throwing it out the airlock then what are we suppose to do?!
— Concerned General

Formless

Revenants have no physical form that we know of, they exist as purely psychic entities that latch onto the consciousness of sentient beings.

Spatial Mastery

They have hyper-acute awareness of it's surrounding, including acoustics, depth, distance. It also has the ability to instantly memorize and navigate interior spaces and trajectory of moving objects within it's psychic radar.

Spatial Warp

Revenants have the ability to warp glass and metal near their host, they often use this to create mazes and entrap their hosts in the walls and crush them.

Psychic Abilities

There's no evidence because Revenants only exist as cognitive thoughts. You don't find thought-stains at a murder scene!
— Revenant Expert when confronted about data.

Mirror

They are able to perfectly copy a host's mind and imitate it's thought patterns, making it impossible to detect with current neural scanning technology. Also any disruption to it's psychic form causes all affected hosts to suffer the same effects.

Radar

It's believed that Revenants are able to detect the presence of sentients within several space miles. The ability isn't instant as ships show signs of individuals surviving for several weeks after the Revenant makes it presence is known. This allows them to keep track of multiple hosts.

Behavior

Maybe it's not a species, It could just be one being.
— Random Extranet Comment

Maze

Revenants will generally reveal themselves by changing their surroundings, creating ever shifting mazes for their hosts. In addition, their hosts believe they must seek a certain phrase found nearby and speak it in order to survive.

True Name

For unknown reasons Revenants will not harm individuals that speak a certain phrase. Many religious species attribute demonic qualities to Revenants, believing that knowing their "true name" will give you power over it. This phrase differs with every recorded encounter. Unfortunately there have been no recorded instance of an individual successfully finding this phrase, making this claim unverifiable.
Revenant

Speculation

The following is merely Extranet speculation with no empirical evidence. The below may be factually incorrect.
  • Maybe the Revenants feed off the memories, thoughts, and emotions of sentient creatures for sustenance.
  • Perhaps Revenants were that one race we exterminated. - High Ranking Culturate in a private meeting.
  • Maybe the Revenant are a punishment because we aren't good enough Sentients. -Barkanoid Savant

This is a really interesting idea. How do they feed off thoughts?

Sep 5, 2018 17:31

Thanks. The details on Revenants are intentionally vague, it's unknown if they even feed off of thoughts.

Oh man, I really like the layout of the article, although if you look at it on mobile it's really junky. It's a very grim species, and I have to admit I really like this tonal shift, I'd love to see some of more serious work in tone, this was a joy to read.

Sep 5, 2018 17:33

Thanks! I'm glad to hear you like my less silly works, i'll keep that in mind for the future.
Unfortunately I don't know enough to fix it on mobile.

Sep 5, 2018 18:52

It's just a byproduct of it being very busy, not sure you can do anything about it. But seriously dude holy shit. Im gonna go subscribe myself to your work just in case you decide to do anything serious cause it's great. Like seriously dude.

Is this a repost? I've listened to that recording before (still shivery though). The format seems a bit busy to me, but I love the idea of beings that feed off of thoughts. Why do they kill their hosts, when they could keep feeding from a living host?

Sep 5, 2018 17:37

Oh yes, this article was for the Tales Foundry competition and the original article used a different template so I had to repost it with the proper template.
But details on the Revenant are intentionally vague, it's unknown how often they take hosts, or even if they need to take hosts for sustenance. That's assuming that they consume thoughts or even need to eat.

Sounds very cool. They are very creepy. They could be a Doctor Who creature.

The introduction of your voice acting added so much to the article! What inspired such a shift in your tone here?

Thanks! The audio log was something I thought i'd try out.
Eventually I want to add depth to this setting by establishing this feeling of an infinite universe of memery but also suggest an infinite but much less noticeable amount of serious works.

Sep 6, 2018 00:31

I love the audiowork on the video for the log! Were these inspired by anything specific or did you creature them completely from scratch?

Sep 6, 2018 00:55

Thanks! I'm glad to hear people like the audio log.

Revenant was written for the Tales Foundry competition and this is my hidden species article. I randomly rolled words and got parasite, sentient, psychic, and cognitive then developed Revenants from there.
Although now that I think about it, it does have similarities to something you would find in Doctor Who, Warhammer 40k, and likely other works I enjoy.

Sep 6, 2018 01:18

That's awesome! Really good idea for the hidden species too.

This concept is interesting! I like the idea of the Revenants, reminds me similar to that of Tulpas in a way. This looks like something I was want to explore into more.

Sep 8, 2018 03:12

Thanks! And I googled it, Tulpas are a really neat idea, I wish I knew about this before I wrote this.

Oh, I wish I hope co-author with people so I can make wonderful projects with you at some point. The cheapest membership is $3 but I currently can't afford it :( Your world is nice, though.

Sep 8, 2018 03:27

I appreciate the compliment but at the moment i'm just writing for fun so I prefer to keep it my own project
But if set up donations and write some great articles i'm sure you can afford a membership.
