Jordan

Jordan

"There's a lot of things I don't care to mention, but that doesn't mean I don't want to be friends."
Jordan is a student attending Taru International Academy . He is planned to be a playable character but will not be released during the First Wave.   Hailing from the Sanguin  tribes, which are disregarded as simple and stupid, trading low-value goods and succumbing to sickness, Jordan knows it won't be an easy first year as a foreign student. Despite this, he can't help but be excited for the adventure and throw himself into the mystery surrounding the school, as rumours of a school curse erupt in frantic whispers across the school grounds. Besides, he may as well enjoy the freedom while he can. Jordan has a life-changing decision approaching him which will alter the reality as Jordan knows it.

Personal history

Jordan was the first child born to Abraham and Mariam, who were travelling in the desert as merchants. Shortly after Jordan was born, his parents stopped for rest in a small hamlet. On a fateful night, the air became suddenly cold and the winds screeched around the black canyons. Abraham rushed to Mariam's tent, screaming that they must leave. Mariam grabbed Jordan in her arms but had little time to tie him to her back. They followed the rest of the hamlet, running into the open sands as quick as possible. From that day on, survivors could not describe what it was they were running from. An enemy tribe? A giant the size of a mountain? A dragon rolling underneath the ground? But whatever it was, the urgency made Mariam trip and stumble over a boulder. Jordan rolled from her hands, down the dunes but Mariam couldn't tell until she realised her blanket was empty. Her screams were muffled in sand and Abraham, unknown to their loss, grabbed onto Mariam's hand tightly and pulled her on, away from their lonely, abandoned son.   Many died during the incident which became known as 'The Wind Howl'. Abraham and Mariam survived, but could only presume their son did not, and held a funeral for him in Sanguin tradition, which involved sending the soul to the heavens. A special ritual was performed as there was no body. It is regarded as a brilliant form of love and custom to perform the ritual for a lost, but dead child. A great sin if the child was still alive, as they would be known as a Soulless One.       A week later in Abraham and Mariam's home village, there were reports of a lion stalking the grounds. Curious travelers flocked, as previously it was believed that lions were extinct. Finally, during nighttime, the last lioness of Gaia entered the village. She laid upon the village alter, and after a defiant roar, she settled. Concerned villagers believed the lion to be pregnant, and sick, as her eyes became weary and her stomach bulged. They fed her with milk which she accepted, though refused their meat. Finally she died. Stricken with grief at the death of the magnificent lion, but full with hope for her newborn, they cut the lionness' stomach.   Inside, was Jordan. Safe and sound.   There was an uproar, with villagers looking at loud voices prophesying different interpretations. No one could agree what the omen meant, but as Mariam took Jordan in her arms, the village became quiet. She said nothing, but walked past villagers she had known since birth, every member considered as brethren. And without a final word, she mounted a camel and took its reigns. She looked back only as Abraham grasped her hands. Without saying a word himself, he mounted another camel, and they left the village for good.   To join a new village is a challenge in itself, as Sanguin tribes consider the village or town itself to be a family. Everyone parents every child. For this reason, completing challenges and quests are often demanded, and it is custom for applicants to share their goods as tribute. Abraham and Mariam did not return for their belongings, but knew that starting a new family alone in the harsh Sanguin lands would be a death sentence. After countless rejections, Abraham and Mariam were accepted into a town named Bev. There they lived contently for most of Jordan's childhood.

Education

Jordan attended school in Bev, which taught him academic skills such as reading, maths and science, as well as practical skills, such as handling wires and construction. Part of his school routine involved meditation twice a day and learning the ways of the Sanguin peoples. From the age of five, his education seemed to change drastically, and his birth parents would disappear for months at a time. He was instructed to meditate for much longer periods and would be taught separately from the other children. When he was seven, he would find out why.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Regaining a soul

In Sanguin custom, as Abraham and Mariam had sent Jordan's soul to the heavens, he was at risk of becoming a soulless one. The priests at Bev believed that a child's body could maintain connection with its soul until a day past the age of seven. So, it was during the age of seven where Jordan had to undergo a grueling challenge to retrieve his soul. He succeeded, but he would never inform even his birth parents on the details of the event. While he was then allowed to mix with the other children, he continued to remain by himself until he became close with a priest, who inspired him to enjoy his childhood and socialise with others again.

This is a wonderful and evocative article! I love how it reads like a strange fairytale. It weaves together different elements in a complex, nuanced and satisfying way. It's as compelling as it is bizarre, and the details are fantastic. I *especially* liked the whole part with the lioness. It is absolutely surreal, but it presents an oddly fitting string of events, all thematically tied together through that mysterious, mind-bending magical atmosphere.

That is quite the origin story - it has a very mythological feeling to it, like the kind I would find in olden tales. Really excellent :D   I really liked the supersition/custom about him potentially being soulless since they "sent his soul to heaven" - really neat cultural touch there. Awesomr stuff :D
