A Vintian Occolto is magical mask that is used in Vintian espionage. They are considered almost sacred and usually passed down by the spymasters of the Famiglie Imperiali houses. Each occolato is unique, made to fit and represent the house it belongs to.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The voice change is achieved through a complex system of Mithril tubes, membranes and springs. Though intricate, it is quite durable. The masks are typically also enchanted with various protective spells to safeguard the wearer.

Significance

Occulto are very decorated, made from precious metals and embedded with rare stones. The masks are worn by the spymasters during balls and change their voice, allowing the wearer to appear in public as a spymaster without revealing their identity. Beside the added security, they also serve as feats of craftsmanship and as a display of wealth and influence.

These ceramic and mithril masks are made for Vintian nobles, though their legendary usefulness have made them an item highly sought by spies, crime lords, and any who would wish their true identity obscured; however, aquisition of one not made for you will, more likely than not, involve violent murder of innocents.



When wearing the mask, you may choose to use it to cast Disguise Self. Whether you choose to or not, you may not do so again until you remove the mask and wear it again. Anyone who saw you with a disguise and sees you again with a different one will be able to tell that something is strange, reaching conclusions at the DM's discretion.


Additionally, while wearing this mask, you gain +5 to deception checks and -5 to persuasion checks.


A medium or small sized humanoid wearing this mask will emit a different voice than normal, which will be unrecognizable as their own. This effect is non magical.
