Remnants Species in Luridity | World Anvil

Remnants

I got it, You got it, We got the magic, Yeah

After the apocalyptical Collision the world of Suborian was reborn, and with it, a species of peoples made of a myriad atoms of those who came before. Remnants were created by the Overlords to provide a source of emergency replenishment for Owners who were given domain over their communities. They are human-like and capable of storing and lightly using magic.   Because Owners can no longer amass the power they once held, Remnant power is dispersed to the point where the two species are reliant on each other. An Owner can draw power from a Remnant to bolster their own or to feed into a large, continuous working. They can also restore power to a Remnant, if the Owner has enough power to do so. Remnants can also pass power to other Remnants, but without an Owner's intervention they cannot full restore themselves if half (or more) of their reserves are spent.   On the surface of Suborian they are scattered broadly, with 2-4 Remnants seeded in each community at the beginning. They live as part of the extant village populations. Surface communities under typical Owners include a number of other peoples, such as Serpentians, though the forms and abilities that these others take are also greatly altered by the aftermath of the apocalypse.   Encouraging births of subsequent generations of Remnants became a priority for the surface villages and cities, in order to increase the available pools of magic and maintain a steady, readily available supply. Unfortunately, each subsequent generation is slightly weaker than the last, dispersing the magic even further.
Eventually, it is probable that surface-born Remnants will lose their ability to produce magic completely.

Exceptions to the Rule

Remnants were provided to Owner of Underhaven's community in much greater numbers than other Owners were granted, and no other species entered Underhaven for hundreds of years. As a result, they have been able to flourish and found a lifestyle wholly unique to Suborian's underground. Underhaven Remnants are also unique in that their original generation appears to be unaging (though not immortal) and subsequent generations retain the level of magic instead of experiencing loss.

Abuse of Power

Most Owners employ moderate use of Remnants and balance the power adequately, though Owner of Underhaven is certainly the most generous in providing for his. There is at least one Owner, however, who nearly reverses this generosity: they have discovered that if they siphon magic from their Remnants and chain it together, they can use it continuously to feed much larger act of creation magic, or a massive act of destruction. If done without the most precise hold on their Remnants' limits, this would kill a number of Remnants in one massive burst of power.

Limits

Daily Works

Remnants almost always use their magic on a low simmer throughout the day, enhancing and improving their capabilities to complete tasks at hand. They may or may not notice this, and magic drain at this low rate can easily be replenished by a good night's sleep. On a larger scale, they can use their power to enhance physical prowess, such as their speed, musculature, and fighting capabilities. This becomes especially important on the surface of Suborian where if one is not fast or fierce enough, not only the wildlife but also the pretty pretty flowers will give chase and do murder.

Creating

Some Owners believe they no longer possess the power of creation, and can only contribute small workings to improve their community, from the resources that already exist. But if enough Remnants are present, their combined power, channeled by an Owner, can be used for small acts of creation.   Remnants themselves cannot use their abilities to create anything.

Overdrawing

Pulling too much magic from a Remnant could be done by touch by an unscrupulous Owner, by overworking their own innate abilities, or by accidentally providing too much replenishment to someone else, all of which will result in them becoming Shagged Out. While Remnants with a tiny amount of magic remaining can be restored through Magic Particle Amplification practices, those who have absolutely no reserves will die.   Owner of Underhaven's Remnants are by far the most magically active of their kind, and he is careful to pay attention to their reserves and recharging practices. Not all Owners on the surface of Suborian, however, care to take this precaution, or don't realize the danger.

This is a great overview for the Remnants.   I love Owner of Underhaven. <3 He takes good care of his people.

That sounds very interesting, well written and I bet it'll get saucy. I am having a little difficulty picturing them though. I'm sort of imagining a cloud of nanites in vaguely human form based on the first sentence, but then I immediately doubt myself :D   Are they just regular people but with a certain divergent magical trait? :)

Underhaven definitely does :D I guess I didn't actually describe them, huh? XD Will fix it in edits--thank you! <3 They were formed by gods, from space debris, so that they appear human. However they are not able to conceive a child with a human, and their livespans are twice as long.

'...not only the wildlife but also the pretty pretty flowers will give chase and do murder. ' Oh no!   Great overview of the Remnants. I liked learning more about them! <3   This is me glaring at the unscrupulous Owner: >:(

I don't like the ones that abuse power over the Remnants. Can I punch them? >:(

Excellent work! I love this world so much, and how it inspires me to lean into my own more lurid stuff.
