At the age of 13, he was a samurai who fought in the Battle of Toba Fushimi. Something happened at that battle that changed him from being a young warrior eager to please his lord to a man who left the military behind for more reasons than the samurai class being abolished. In the Meiji era, he became a politician in Kobe who pushed for unity after the tumultuous events of the Restoration.
