Kubo Takeuchi

窪 竹内

Samurai and member of the Isshin Shishi. Joined the Shishi at the age of 18. He had read several Yoshida Shouin's letters and found he felt much the same way as the great teacher did, especially about how the shogunate leadership had failed Japan, how it was important for Japan to not become a colony and for the country to industrialize as quickly as possible.   Close friends with Iwasaki Hiroshige, who followed him to the Shishi. He always looked out for his friend, who leaned on him often for advice. Iwasaki saw Kubo's genius and encouraged him to dip a toe into the political sphere.   In 1864, after his group failed to take Kyoto, he took refuge in a small village, along with Iwasaki. Reluctantly he went against the convention of getting permission to marry from his feudal lord and married a farmer's daughter. His parents were upset, but he owed the family much for sheltering him. Eventually, his parents forgave him when they found out why. The marriage to a lower family spelled the end of Kubo's pre-Meiji era dreams for the political sphere, but he loved his wife.   He took part in the Battle of Toba Fushimi and died the last day of the battle. After his death, his parents took his wife in and adopted her as their daughter.
