Iwasaki Hiroshige

岩崎 広重

Samurai and member of the Isshin Shishi. He joined the Shishi at the age of 22, following the lead of his close friend Kubo Takeuchi. Despite being a strong and talented warrior, Iwasaki leaned on Kubo for his intelligence and strategic mind. He believed Kubo would go far as a Samurai and encouraged him to also pursue a career as a statesman.   In 1864, after their group failed to take Kyoto, Iwasaki and Kubo both sheltered in a rural village outside of Kyoto, where they both married local women. This was forbidden under the shogunate government. Samurai were expected to receive permission from their lord. But he felt indebted to the family that hid him. He and his wife did not get along well, but he did his best to make the arrangement work.   He died at the Battle of Toba Fushimi, trying to protect Kubo. His parents never had the chance to find out he had married, but he left enough money for his wife to live well in her village. A samurai is always prepared for death.
