Ruins of Ripon Cathedral

2156: Lieben Oracle V1

A transcription from the recollections of the Mater Machine Lieben .   The Conglom was never so cruel as the day they destroyed Ripon Cathedral out of spite. Demyan Anastas and I were running in the 2090's, biding our time while I learned and Demyan designed the Amethyst Crown. The Idless began to turn its back, Grid by Grid we never knew if they would welcome or pitch us away.    In a series of desperate turns, we ran from the small market town of Masham, North York to Ripon.    Locked in the crypt by a well meaning collection of Neo Jesu, we clung together. Cillian drifted off, and it was that Ripon became the place where Demyan and I wed.    The clergy from the Cathedral saw well enough the affection between us, and although Ripon was no Orthodox Christian Cathedral, the scant icons they did have were witness to our nuptials. The Neo Jesu didn't discount my devotion due to my artificial existence. While Hal Grundy might have created for me a passport and documents to create a legitimate life, the actions of those clergy created a stream of events, where my existence as a sapient, self-aware person was approved by multiple authorities.    I was contented. Demyan relaxed, rectified the pieces of me which belonged to Sophia.    The Conglomerate of Gaia destroyed the Cathedral in 2097, in an attempt to weed Demyan and I out. We were not even on the same continent at the time.

Purpose / Function

A place of faith and respite, Rippon Cathedral was the site of religious worship in the Christian vein since the 6th Century CE. By the 2040's, Rippon Cathedral became a bastion for those who sought life outside the rising corpocratic ties, a place of charity, faith and deliverance.

Valuables

Prior to its destruction, Ripon Cathedral was richly decorated with gold, tapestries & carvings from centuries of United Kingdom occupation and design.    Once Ripon became a stack of rubble, most of the holy artifacts were either destroyed or recovered and displaced.

Alterations

The Cathedral at Rippon existed in one form or another since the 670's CE. A wonder of Early English & Gothic architecture, Rippon Cathedral is a monument of evolving stone.    By the 2040's, Rippon included a series of capsule dwellings outside the main Cathedral to hover on the grounds and house those who required it.    The majority of alterations were technological until the tragic destruction of the Cathedral in 2097.

Architecture

One of the finest examples of Cathedral architecture in European history, Rippon Cathedral was a wealth of Gothic & Early English style. From flying buttresses, to carvings of Kings and Archbishops, to the inspiration for many of Lewis Caroll's famous figures, Rippon was a pristine and wonderful place.

Defenses

The sanctity of the Church.

History

One of the oldest places of faith in British & Scottish history, the crypt dates back to the 6th Century CE. Both Anglo-Saxon Pagan and Christian artifacts were found scattered on the grounds, but since the late 600's, the site was predominantly Christian. A truly epic Cathedral in North York.

Tourism

Homo Sapiens have been making pilgrimage to Rippon for over 1,000 years. A constant influx of travellers and spiritual hopefuls washed across Rippon's town until the 2070's, when Rippon Cathedral turned itself into a shelter and hospital during The Flag War  By the 2090's, the tourist trade shifted to a trickle, as Neo Jesu engaged in a peaceful 'battle' to convert the Cathedral from Anglican. The battle consisted of a group of holy folk from either side leaving prayer cards for the other upon the altars scattered through the Cathedral.    The 'war' was concluded in 2094, when Neo Jesu Priests earned the right to hold prayer events and teaching hours in the Quire every Sunday afternoon and Friday evenings.
