Joseph Jones Character in The Works of Johannes T. Evans | World Anvil

Joseph Jones

Joseph Jones grew up in Henry Coffey's home in Birmingham, joining the household when his mother, Maria, took over as head housekeeper, when he was two. His father, John Edward Jones, served as a petty officer in His Majesty's Royal Navy, and died in a naval skirmish off Cape Finisterre when Joseph was thirteen.    When Joseph was twenty-two, Maria fell in the street and died, and for a period after burying her he traveled for a few years in England, then returned to Birmingham.     Joseph is a deeply empathetic man, very caring, and he has a great heart for poetry and music especially. He loves animals, and as he rose to become butler of Henry's household, he always put a focused emphasis on teaching others useful skills, both relating to their positions as service staff and otherwise, that would better serve them as they went on.   He is a competent sorcerer, with a natural inclination for the art, and uses magic freely and easily, with neither word nor implement to guide him.    At the age of thirty-eight, in 1764, he met [Gráinne ní hEachthighearna], and within a few months the two of them were married and living together in Birmingham, with Joseph having taken a position at one of Henry's warehouses as foreman.
