Elephants

Wanderers of the Plains

Large feet march in line as a roaming herd follows their matriarch, slowly crossing grasslands and worn paths that lead them to water and the most delicious food. Many generations march together, new babies tugging their mothers' tails while older members surround the younglings, providing safety with their numbers and size. Few would attempt to infiltrate the wandering herd, singling out the smallest or the oldest could mean harm to whatever predator decided to test the presence of the herd.   Elephants are considered the largest creatures in the plains and grassland areas of the Southern Continent where they live. These creatures are massive lumbering animals that command respect in the Scorched Plains, Strangeway Flats, and the Sunset Fields where they tend to travel long distances to find the best water and food sources for their herds. Their large ears and long trunks set these animals apart from the other large mammals that roam these lands.   Those who have crossed paths with Elephants often are left unscathed or find themselves with many injuries. The herd will protect its young at all costs, those that watch the lumbering wandering of the Elephants are often safe, but those that watch too closely may find themselves trampled as a threat. Travelers find it often better to watch from a distance as these majestic creatures continue down their path to wherever they wish to go.

Basic Information

Elephant Herd
Elephants are far from solitary creatures, often living in large herds that are made up of a matriarch and her children. Multiple generations can make up a single herd.

Anatomy

Elephants are extremely large creatures that can stand up to eleven feet tall at the shoulder and can reach up to twenty-one feet in length. These creatures can weigh between three thousand and thirteen thousand pounds, making them by far one of the largest creatures in the world and the largest creature in the grasslands they call home.   These animals have extremely dense and strong bones that provide a measure of safety to their bodies, which are covered in thick, tough skin that is often difficult to penetrate. Because of this, Elephants have few predators that prey on them, although younglings and the eldest of the herd are often easy targets for some predators.   Large ear flaps that keep the creatures cool and long trunks that can be used to reach and grab food define the Elephants' features. These features allow them to thrive in the warmer climates of the Southern Continent where food is often high off the ground and temperatures make the grasslands somewhat desolate. Elephants also have long tusks that can be used for protection.   Their heavy bones keep Elephants from truly running or jumping, but these creatures are known for their ambling gait that can reach speeds of up to sixteen miles per hour. Elephants' large size makes this gait seamless and easy, allowing the animals to travel at this speed for a great distance before tiring. These animals can also swim for hours rather effortlessly.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Southern Continent is known for a much hotter and drier climate than the Northern Continent, allowing for a greater range of animals. Elephants tend to live in the warmest and driest places of the continent, including the Scorched Plains, Strangeway Flats, and Sunset Fields where predators are often small in number but plants flourish in oasis-like areas.
