Riox's avatar Myth in Iphars | World Anvil

Riox's avatar

Iphars is being reworked! Please bear with me!

I saw Lars Sik's parents being healed. It was Riox, with a human body, who came down to heal them with the crystal Lars's always talking about and its own magic.
— Jarrah Aecan

Riox's avatar are some myth that Jarrah Aecan started spreading after finding out the religion Lars Sik started creating (Church of the Hidden One), and they talk about a humanoid figure who appeared mysteriously to what seems to be a random place, help people in need, and then disappearing again. Jarrah Aecan had gathered three tales about the Riox's avatar: Igburn's tale (the first myth, saw by Jarrah himself), Irna's fire story (second myth, barely anyone knows it as a lot of witnesses died), and Kinduar necromancer saviour (the third myth, know as tale to tell kids before sleeping in Kinduar).
Years later, theses myths would gather together some people from the Church of the Hidden One, and they would create the Riox's arcana sect, with the common goal of finding Riox's avatar and plead them to teach the sect how magic work.

Igburn's tale

Riox appeared in the middle of the night. They appeared from thin air, and everything nearby seemed to stop making sounds, one couldn't even hear the moving of the lava, it was unsettling. Their movement was strange, as if they had to familiarize with how the world worked and a heavy breath came from them... or was it two breathes?

They went straight to the main tent, where everything was stored and the ill rested. Inside, they moved their hand over the investigation's materials and tools without touching any of them, till they found the crystal. The crystal that the Sik couple called it Mesertine and believed to have magical properties, and somehow, it called Riox's attention. They took one of the two crystals and crushed it with their own hands as it was nothing. They dumped all the dust from the crystal in a mortar and took it near a water bucket. While Riox's hand approached the water, it floated till it reached the hand, which Riox directed it inside the mortar.

A strange small winged creature exited their bag and climbed to Riox's shoulder, it stayed there, watching carefully each movement Riox did while playingd with Riox's earring. A sound similar to a chuckle came from Riox, followed by a movement with their free hand to move their hair so the small creature could play freely with the earring.

Jarrah Aecan

He is a Kreanes who was part of the Crystal expedition, one of the first expeditions to investigate Igburn and where the first recorded act of magic happened. He was patrolling the camp during the night when he saw Riox's avatar and swears that, while it looked like a human woman, there was something inhumane in them
that made him shiver, but the magic they did called Jarrah's attention. Since that day, Jarrah tried to find Riox's avatar but failed. He started the Riox's arcana sect before dying, after talking to some followers of the Church of the Hidden One and hearing similar tales that he attributed to the Riox's avatar.

Riox started smashing crushing the dust with the pestle while walking towards the ill Sik couple. Once next to them, Riox dipped one their fingers on the mix and started to draw on them, first in the face, then they raised the ills' shirt and drawing in their abdomen as well. Riox readjusted their shirts while chanted in some strange language, with a rough voice. The chanting turned into a cough in the middle of what sounded like a sentence, scaring the creature which managed to throw Riox's earring to the floor while it was going back to the bag.

They stopped the coughing a couple of seconds later and started heading to the Axysk lake, mortar in hand, without realizing they had lost the earring and stopped a meter in front of the lava lake. They looked at the mortar once more before letting it fall to the lake. Jarrah used that moment to enter the main tent and take the earring. As he took the earring, he felt an unnatural touch in his shoulder, Riox's hand was on his shoulder while the other one was open, asking for the earring. Jarrah gave them the earring and saw the creature take the last crystal from the table and take it with itself when going back to Riox's bag.

And with a small warm smile, Riox disappeared in front of Jarrah.

Irna's fire story

20 or so years ago there was a fire in Irna's forest. Unstoppable and growing fiercer and bigger each day, people were getting ready to evacuate the island. One night, with Riox being full, a kid Kreanes, appeared in between the chaos of the evacuation, followed by a creature similar to a kid made of rocks, heading towards a mine that was being emptied of tools and assets, where blue Mesertine was being mined. Both of them took two crystal (as big as their hands) and ran to where the fire was nearest, followed by a hunter, who was worried about the two kids running to the fire.

The hunter followed them to the frontlines of the fire, near a river, where the child started drawing some kind of symbol on the floor with what seemed to be dust from the blue Mesertine. The water around seemed to be attracted by the symbol, floating away from the river and exited the plants, leaving them dead, to float over the symbol both child where drawing. Soon, all that water become a cloud that grew bigger and bigger as the river drained. When the river was almost fully drained, the water stopped coming, the cloud flew to the sky and the biggest and wild storm rained over the fire, making it fully die in less than an hour. It looked like each water drop slowly crawl to where it was before it was sucked to the symbol.

The hunter then saw how both the child had the same earring, in differents ears, and how the necklace of one of them caught fire, they were trying to put out the fire and when they managed to do, both of them started laughing before taking their hands together and disappearing. The hunter tried to see the symbol drawn on the floor, but the wind started rising, and the dust flew away.

Kinduar necromancer

Kinduar had had a problem of corpses walking again for at least one year (though they don't know when it started as it started in the immense maze of sewers they have. They did not attack, they did not destroy, they only roamed around, first in the sewers and for the last year, some managed to exit the sewers and wander around the city, mostly in the night as sun-light seemed to bother them.

One week, a humanoid figure appeared in the city. It was found in the sewers and it approached some guards that were fighting zombies. The figure approached the zombies in the middle of the fight, dodging all the attacks, and it blew some dust in the faces of the corpses. These fell to the floor death again and the guards went to thanks the mysterious figure but ran away when they saw the figure. A pale face, with white eyes, no nose nor mouth, only one ear, from which an earring was hanging from. The hands were long and slim with black claws and a necklace being used as a bracelet. One of the guards stop for a moment to look behind and saw that thing blowing again dust over the corpses; they stood up again and a sound similar to a laugh was emitted to from the figure before it blows once again and the corpses fell again. It turned its face, towards the shocked guard, and a mouth appeared in its face just to make a smile to the guard and signed him to come. The guard went next to the creature, sword in hand, and was given a small sack with dust. It talked with a rough voice, "This in death face. It wake and kill them. Things alive are not affected. I am friend.", and with yet another creepy smile, it disappeared.

The guards of Kinduar started using the dust with the corpses, but they soon ran out, and corpses still appeared. It appeared again, this time in the house of the guard in the middle of the night. This time, it looked more human-like, with yellow eyes, a mouth, a nose and both ears. It talked again, "There are crystals. Where you drop the death people. Follow... me!", it extended its hand to the guard and took him where the people were throwing the deads to then bury them, and jumped with the corpses. It walked to a wall and after scratch it for a bit, it took a crystal and showed to the guard. "These make them awake. It needs some time for the first time to awake, but it awakes them. Your people need to mine it all out." It gave the crystal to the guard and took another, which stored it in its bag. And yet again, with a creepy smile, it disappeared again.

The next days, these crystals were mined out and, after killing for a couple of days some corpses, they never appeared again. And nor did the mysterious figure.

Avatar's home

There are tales, lots of them, over a dozen of them, that talk about a distant place where they wake up after being left to die. They talk of a room, a white room with a bed and a closet, nothing else. They always wake up when that mysterious person is in the room, a person identic to their most beloved person, yet they never act like who they copy. Their voice starts rough, and as they talk, their voice turns sweeter, their words are always calm and comfortable, and they explain what happened. They present themself as Echo and avoid personal questions and most of the questions related to the place where they both are.

The people that go there are wounded, people left to die who have been abandoned, the wounds don't need to be physical, many of them are mental rather than physical. Both kindsof people have different stays. The physically wounded are the first to leave, they only stay there until their wounds heal, and in that place, wounds heal quick, too quick to be by natural means. Mentally wounded don't leave so easily, they even say that some of them have never left that place. Mental wounds don't heal, they are always told this, but they can feel better, they just need some love. Echo helps them as best as they can: they let them have walks on their favourites places (beaches on sunset, a mountain on a cool day, etc), they give them temporal pets, they show the wounded how much they matter and teach them how to start loving themselves. For some, together with time, this is all they need and they will leave that place; for others, it is not so easy, they are too broken and may crash after going back to Iphars, they never leave, they stay with Echo and only leave when they die either by suicide or old age.

Who is Riox's avatar?

Echo accessories
by Catoblepon
Little is known about this avatar (as people like to call them). They always seem to appear from nowhere and disappear to nowhere. They usually appear near Mesertine and, after helping in some way, they collect a bit of Mesertine before disappearing once more. Each time they have appeared, they looked differently: as a Humans woman, as a Kreanes child and as a strange species not native of Iphars.
While each time they appear they look different, they have always appeared with the same two accessories: a feather necklace, and an earring with a tooth. They also seem to always be accompanied by some strange creature, though not all myths talk about a creature and one of them seems to be a child from an unknown creature.

Oo this is really intriguing. I wonder how much truth there is to the stories and if Riox's avatar really exists.

What if all is true? What is all false? Are they really the same person or avatar? Is Riox really a god with an avatar? Let's find out when I finish the Echo article :D

Great job on coming up with three stories about the same being and finding the way to make all of them connected, but still distinct and believable. It truly felt like I was around a bonfire hearing them.   The Echo concept has intrigued me very much. I hope that I can see it soon! Surely it will answer all of those burning questions.

This was a really interesting article Cato!! I loved the way the four myths tie into one another, they tell a very nice story and go a great job of revealing a little more about the avatar each time, without taking away any of the mystery surrounding them.
