Birdfish Cloth

Made from the scaled feathers of many species of Birdfish, this type of cloth is used to compose many textile products, such as high quality clothing and the sails for Planeships. This type of cloth is especially important for Planeships, as the material is the only material which can catch the mystical currents of the Cosmic Sea.

Properties

Primary Resource

Many species of Birdfish have what people call Scaled Feathers. For example the Aquimotos, which has wings made these scaley feathers. The Aquimotos use these wings to 'flim'. These feathers are harvested, as the barb of these feathers are woven and weaved to make threads, sheets and other textile goods.

Production

Once the feather is harvested from the animal by either plucking or sheering (depending on the animal), the barb (the fluffy, feathery bit) must then be stripped away from the stalk/stem. Many of the barbs are similar to cotton, thus they can be treated as such. Once the stem is clipped away, the barb is then spun into yarns and threads; which can them be loomed into sheets. These textile sheets can then be cut and stitched up to make all sorts of things.

Cultural Reception

Birdfish cloth is a popular, yet rare material, which is used in many items of clothing for fashion; especially for the wealthy. Birdfish are extremely dangerous to capture, as the Cosmic Sea is a volitile place to traverse. However the demand of such a material is forever on the high, especially as it's a required material for the sails of many Planeships.
