Stonehold Keep
Stonehold Keep is a fortress built into the rocky cliffs of the Ironcrest Mountains, originally constructed as a military stronghold to guard the Frostfall Pass and protect Aural’s northern frontier. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a center of knowledge and arcane study, serving as a sanctuary for Magisters and scholars seeking to uncover the mysteries of the mountains and the remnants of the Eternal Essence.
History
Origins and Military Role
Stonehold Keep was built in 278 AC, during the early expansion of the Aurelian Empire, intended as a defensive bulwark against incursions from the north. Positioned at a strategic point along the treacherous Frostfall Pass, the keep was crucial in defending trade routes and repelling invasions from rival factions and northern raiders.
Throughout its history, Stonehold has withstood multiple sieges due to its formidable stone walls and natural defenses. Its remote location and self-sufficient infrastructure allowed it to survive prolonged conflicts, and it became a vital supply point for imperial forces stationed in the Ironcrest Mountains.
Transition to an Enclave
Following the Second Imperial Civil War, as tensions with Frostheir lessened, the keep's role as a military stronghold diminished. The Magisters took interest in the fortress, drawn by the unexplored depths beneath the mountains and the potential for magical discoveries. Over time, Stonehold Keep was repurposed into an Enclave of knowledge and research, where scholars, alchemists, and mages could study the mountains’ mysteries.
Today, the keep remains semi-autonomous, still housing a small defensive garrison but largely controlled by the Magisters, who use it as a research center and repository of ancient knowledge.
Architecture and Structure
Stonehold Keep is an imposing structure, seamlessly integrated into the mountain itself. Carved from the natural rock, it features thick stone walls, reinforced battlements, and hidden passageways leading deep into the mountains.
Key sections of the keep include:
- The Outer Walls – Fortified defenses with guard towers overlooking Frostfall Pass.
- The Grand Hall – A vast chamber serving as a meeting place for scholars, military officers, and Magisters.
- The Arcane Archives – A library containing ancient texts, research on Eternal Essence, and records of historical battles.
- The Deep Vaults – A series of underground tunnels rumored to house lost relics and hidden chambers.
- The Observatory – A structure atop the highest tower, used by scholars to study the celestial movements and their influence on magic.
Strategic and Academic Importance
Stonehold Keep remains a vital outpost despite its shift in function. Its role in research and diplomacy has made it a neutral ground where political factions, Magisters, and military officials convene for delicate negotiations. Additionally, the keep provides a safe haven for those traversing the perilous Frostfall Pass.
The Magisters believe that the mountains beneath Stonehold hold traces of the Eternal Essence, possibly linked to artifacts left behind from the Calamity. This has fueled extensive excavation efforts, though many tunnels remain unexplored due to unstable conditions and mysterious occurrences deep within the mountain.
Legends and Mysteries
Many legends surround Stonehold Keep, some grounded in history, others steeped in folklore. Among the most famous are:
- The Vanishing Guard – Tales of entire patrols disappearing in the deep tunnels beneath the keep.
- The Sealed Chamber – A room within the Deep Vaults said to contain a relic of immense power, locked away centuries ago.
- The Whispering Walls – Some claim that at night, the stone walls echo with voices of past rulers and fallen warriors.
- The Frozen Sentinel – A statue within the Great Hall that some believe is not carved stone, but an ancient warrior trapped in time.
