Horny Toad | E. Christopher Clark

Horny Toad

The horny toad is a species of frog native to the land of Eden. Essentially a frog with a pair of horns on its head, the animal is best known for the mucus it secretes. This so-called “Toad Sweat” is a powerful aphrodisiac, you see—so powerful, in fact, that the use of its undiluted form has been banned in many parts of the world.

As incredibly misunderstood as it is incredibly fecund, the horny toad is the subject of numerous folktales and superstitions throughout the world—particularly in Wonderland, where colloquialisms involving the species abound.

For instance, Wonderlanders whose teenage daughters have accidentally gotten pregnant often “blame the frog.” The phrase “he has warts on his tongue” is an accusation of sexual promiscuity. And aging Edenians, rather than “sowing their wild oats” as they might on Earth, are said to “still have frogs to lick.”

The Earthling fairy tale “The Frog Prince” is believed to have been inspired by a human’s encounter with a horny toad during The Second Age.

I love them too! Author Goddess (Sarah Buhrman) suggested a couple of them and then I riffed on those to come up with the rest.
