Gok-Rock

Background

Free real estate

Despite the crude, inhospitable-sounding name, Gok-Rock (and the coastal agricultural community that has sprung up around it) is something of an oasis compared to the continent-spanning deserts and untamable rainforests that make up the rest of Chezri.

It is now the second-largest city in south Chezri, with only Kolkuzhn boasting a larger population, and is the headquarters of the South Chezri Trading Company.

If you select the 'climate' layer on the map below (which still needs lining up properly), you'll see that Gok-Rock is in a green Humid Subtropical Climate, which is excellent for farming Chezrian Wheat.

There is not much of this climate at all on Chezri. There is, however, a lot of access to water, trees and decent sail fabric. Hence: pirates.

The original name, Rugnokuzhn, translates to something like 'the sea's life-giving rocks', referring to its nature as a coastal cornucopia surrounded by barren deserts.

Over time, this became simplified and bastardised as more and more non-tilkens starting referring to it. It was then re-adopted by the people of Chezri simply because no-one else knew what they were talking about it when they spoke of Rugnokuzhn.

Exonym

These days, you are very unlikely to hear the place referred to as anything but Gok-Rock unless you're speaking a local language.

How do you keep coming up with your titles "free real estate" xp I like your climate layer on the map as well! Perhaps I will do that too at some point :)   The origin of the name was a nice addition as well.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for puns.   Thanks! The linguistic history of the name and the climate map are two windows into the ridiculous amount of thought I put into things that definitely do not need that much thought put into them.

Oh yeah indeed I try to match my place names with my language of the area xp (mostly I change language words based on cool sounding place names :p) But it is fun to think about such stuff :)
