Sulmus

The best and worst description I ever heard for Sulmus is the sweat an aroma of emotion. I am both intrigued and disgusted by the simplicity of this explanation.
— Virelia Sunfire, Sage of the 3rd Circle of the Luminae Institute

What Is Sulmus?

Sulmus, the substance of emotion, exists as an ephemeral and alluring aroma that is emanating off of the strong emotions of sentient beings, especially mortals. Sulmus, however, holds a dangerous allure for certain supernatural creatures. Some are drawn by a primal hunger to the potent energies emitted by intense emotions. Others seek to feed on the Sulmus, consuming it as sustenance to prolong their own existence. While yet more may use this emotion fuel to work powers both great and small, not unlike mages. It is whispered that some many manifest the stolen Sulmus into weapons, armor or twisted devices for their own ends.

While most of my colleagues will put forth that Sulmus is yet one more name for the many things we already study, like essence, mana and life force. I would agree while taking the discussion a step further, with the difference being the method and filter. Much like a prism changes light that passes through it, the byproduct of strong emotion is yet another aspect of the whole.
— Isolde Moonweaver, Venerable Elven Sage

Dark Taste

Darker creatures often resort to manipulative tactics, intentionally provoking mortals into experiencing heightened emotions. They deftly stoke the fires of anger, fear, sorrow, or passion, pushing mortals to react with emotional intensity. This not only amplifies the release of Sulmus but also allows the supernatural creatures to feed upon the essence more readily. Make no mistake this is a mystical assault and invasion upon the target, even when done for a short time and with intent to not leave lasting harm.

Mortal Shell

The feeding process, while providing fuel and sustenance for these creatures, has adverse effects on mortals. As they consume the Sulmus, it weakens the essence of the mortal, draining their vitality and shortening their lifespan. Mortals may experience various health issues, both physical and emotional, as a result of this continuous draining of their essence. They may experience chronic fatigue, increased susceptibility to illnesses, and a general sense of malaise. Furthermore, the continuous feeding by the darker creatures can lead to emotional instability and a diminished capacity to experience and express emotions.
