Grand Umbral Archont
The Grand Umbral Archont is a title bestowed upon the highest-ranking figure in the enigmatic Order of the Midnight Eclipse. This person holds great authority and influence within the Order, serving as its leader, and a spiritual guide. The Grand Umbral Archont is trained in arcane magic and has profound martial skills. Usually, a Grand Umbral Archont selects their protegé while they are still alive, and trains them for years and decades if necessary.
Form of Address
The Grand Umbral Archont is rarely addressed officially, though so far every Archont also holds a title of nobility. Accordingly, he or she is usually referred to by the official title when outsiders are present.
Within the Order, the Archont is addressed either informally as "Archont" or in more formal situations and rituals as "Your Eminence". In private settings, especially with the chosen protégé, the Archont is casually referred to by his first name. However, such close relationships are extremely rare.
Responsibilities
The Archont has a whole set of duties within the Order. On a day-to-day basis, he is responsible for overseeing the training of acolytes, instructing them, and selecting their successor from among the new recruits. In addition, the Archont's duties include reviewing and cataloging arcane writings, as well as assessing the potential danger posed by the knowledge.
Furthermore, in the rites of the Order, the Archont is responsible for ensuring that everything is done correctly and that the timing as well as the performance of the ritual takes place properly. When the Order goes to war, it is the Archont's duty to stand in the front line of battle and lead the members of the Order into battle. It is therefore not uncommon for an Archont to hold a high rank in the secular military as well.
