Forsaken Species in The Garden that Burned | World Anvil

Forsaken

Brief Overview

The Forsaken are divine servants which were created by a deity, and forsaken by moral gods. Any moral god can forsake the servant without the servant becoming a Forsaken, but all remaining moral deities will recognize if the servant was disowned by their creator.

General Overview

Once all moral gods reject the servant they are stripped of their divine blessings. If either of the below prerequisites were met, they would then be considered a Forsaken Servant.

  1. If a servant is rejected by all moral gods
  2. If they were to be stripped of their feathers
Due to this fact, they are normally assumed to be servants in league with amoral gods, as not only would the moral deities no longer accept their services, but the amoral deities would renew their divinity with different blessings.
The Forsaken are feared by mortals far and wide due to their ability to possess other beings and use them like puppets. There are methods to purge the Forsaken from a mortal, however, these practices are difficult and, therefore very expensive.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

True Form

Their biological traits vary heavily from Forsaken to Forsaken as their entire physical form can be altered to suit the task at hand. They cannot alter their size, or weight, however, the rest of their body can transform if given enough time.

Wearing Another

Notable effects of the Forsaken ability to possess a mortal start with the immediate decline of the mortals body. Within hours the mortals body begins to die unless they find a way to consume the vital source which would correct what the Forsakens power was depleting. Blood.
The more the Forsaken consumes while in their mortal form, the more they will mutate. Extreme cases of possessed mortals report that the victim no longer looked like their original species by the time the Forsaken had left their body.
"Its jaw disconnected and it had these huge teeth! And then it had this tail, it was spiky and it broke bones as it struck the soldiers. I watched a Terranian snap in half today... Whatever that man had become... It was no longer human."
- A terrified Aquean villager

It has been discovered that the effects of a Forsaken possessing a mortal leads directly to vampirism, no matter the circumstances. A vast majority of their victims remain broken in the mind with their absence, either falling apart, or turning into feral monsters who hunt those they once loved due to a newfound psychological mix up between the feelings of love and hunger. Their bodies remain mutated, and most will have developed an addiction to blood, or at the very least foods that are particularly high in iron.

Genetics and Reproduction

Originally they were created unable to reproduce, however, after they realized that their ability to manipulate their DNA could be used as they chose, many created themselves reproductive organs based on the original design the humans were using by importing genetic samples into themselves. They take a minimum of three centuries to grow within the womb, however this can be sped up by exposure to concentrated forms of tari.
The result has and will always be elven offspring. Born of divine servants, but with the added genes of humanity due to the samples used.

Growth Rate & Stages

They do not grow, they are created as they are...

Biological Cycle

The Forsaken do not have cycles, their biology will change at will in accordance to their power, and it will change to what is most convenient for the task at hand. Most will fake or find a mortal form to wear around so it's easier to approach mortals. They are more than adept at manipulating their own DNA.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They interact with one another solely based on the deities that they serve. If they serve conflicting deities they will likely either fight in the name of their gods, or avoid one another all together.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Forsaken are capable of many tricks, though most of their abilities depend on the god they serve. The commonplace capabilities all divine servants possess are defined below, and will serve as a base template to start. They are capable of;

  1. Altering their physiology
  2. Shifting from plane to plane
  3. Their blood can induce madness
  4. A Forsaken is 10x stronger than an average mortal
  5. They can possess a mortals body
All Forsaken possess the above abilities, and the blessings gifted by their respective deity. As mentioned above, the abilities of a Forsaken largely vary based on the god that they serve. Two common examples of Forsaken are listed below as examples.
Lucifers Forsaken Absolums Forsaken
They can move through flames, inflict 2x the amount pain when they injure something, they can typically tell when they're being lied to, they can speak to their god at will, they're resistant to fire and fear effects, they smell fear, gain power from punishing the guilty, and those are all the abilities commonly known of Lucifers servants. Absolums Forsaken can shadow stride, they feel no fear, they also sense and feed off fear, they gain power from negative energies projected by mortals, they can stalk creatures using their shadows, and those are the only abilities commonly known of Absolums servants.
Each deity offers their own respective abilities with each blessing, though more times than not the blessing will directly corelate with the skills and capabilities of the deity in question.
