Sealing the Rifts

The many methods folks have used to try and close rifts to other realms.

Since the cataclysmic events of The Rupture fifty years ago, folks across Melior have been experimenting with different ways to seal dangerous rifts.

Plugging

One of the first methods used to seal rifts is to try and fill it with material. Dirt, rubble, and sand has worked effectively for some smaller rifts but has an issue is that unless both sides are filled and covered, the material will either fall through or be very obvious on the other side - causing investigations and digging which can reveal it again.

Caging

The most popular method of sealing the rifts is to place a perimeter around them, either with walls or fencing, and sometimes stationed with guards depending on the threats posed from the other side. For rifts that opened in areas of significance, they are sometimes entombed with thick sheets of metal.

Trapping

For rifts in rural areas that are problematic due to invading species, traps are placed around the rift to prevent anything coming through. Deterrents such as mirrors, chimes, and noisemakers are also stationed around it to frighten away smaller creatures. Nets are used to prevent birds, flying creatures, and insects - while circles of salt, sand, and hazardous materials are put on the floor to deter crawling things.

Destroying

Attempts have been made to tear apart the rifts using ropes, chains, and staves, but with no luck. Massive fires have been lit inside of the rifts too, which can be a good temporary measure of sealing them if the flames can be maintained, but ultimately has no effect on the size of the rift.
