There are few more powerful than those of a high religious standing. For who could instigate wars between nations quicker than an archbishop with a holy grudge, or clergy heads that incite a divine rite against their peers?
In Ma'rune, there are three main religions.
The first is the Church of Van-Hael, worshipping the Ghost Prince, Van-Hael himself. They follow eight tenets of faith, where each tenet carries an aspect of Van-Hael's teachings.
Next, there are the Nightsingers. Worshippers of Valis, the High Queen, and Sar, the Gracious Father. They follow the teachings of Valis and Sar as well as the teachings of the Whispered Twins, who are revered as the chosen champions of Valis and Sar.
Finally, there is the Elryvian Pantheon. A collection of Gods and Goddess' with equal standing. No God or Goddess is seen as greater than another. Although their worship of Van-Hael, Valis and Sar has waned, mainly due to the influence of the Chruch and the Nightsingers, they still believe that these three are in fact dieties of Ma'rune. Worshippers of the Pantheon hope that one day the Church and the Nightsingers will set aside their differences so that all Gods and Goddess' may be worshipped freely once more.

Some believe that there are more deities than what the Pantheon, the Church, or the Nightsingers would have you believe. These deities are known as the Forgotten Ones and worshipping any of these deities elicits a variety of reactions depending on where in Ma'rune you are. The Church finds such beliefs to be blasphemous. The Nightsingers, although they don't see it as blasphemous, will shun those who believe in the Forgotten Ones and some may find the whole ordeal extremely amusing. The Pantheon is the most accepting, as it is close to their nature of worshipping multiple deities already.
I suppose the question is, then, are the Forgotten Ones simple myth, or are they as real as the the Ghost Prince, the Nightsinger Siblings, or the many deities of Elryvian? I for one would argue that yes, the Forgotten Ones exist - or at least existed. Something must have happened between them and the other deities in order for them to be forgotten, for no mortal could hold such power. After all, one of the most common occurrences of the Forgotten Ones is Ma'rune themselves - The World, The Creator, surely a would be ruler of the Gods - how could a mortal possibly make the worlds population stop believing in such a fiersome being?
