Phae Dyes Flyer in Camp Phae'lan

Dyes are the prize when it comes to Camp Phae'lan, with their signature trading resource being Phae Dyes.

A Competitive History

Around 700 years ago when manufacturers in Camp Phae’lan started out, it was a free for all between who could harvest the materials for dye production from an environment that was rich with opportunity. There were a total of fourteen competitors in the business, all of whom were eager to out-perform their rivals and claim the monopoly on the dyes production in Camp Phae’lan.

Despite that desperation, none of them would try to kill or maim their rivals - rather a surprise for those in the production business. Outside of Camp Phae'lan however, there was no end of dye rivals from outside the kingdom of Valissa that would rather see the production coming out of Camp Phae'lan cease.

This was the deciding factor for the competitors in Camp Phae’lan. They banded together, using their vast knowledge of dye craft, in order to start a business that would put Camp Phae'lan's name out into the world. Thus, the Phae Dyes were created.

Booming Trade

Phae Dyes became a huge hit across Valissa. They were easy to transport across the kingdom, very quick for the manufacturers in Camp Phae’lan to produce, and were a lot cheaper than dyes coming from elsewhere across Ma’rune. The success of Phae Dyes across Valissa led to an endorsement from the Emperor of Valissa around 150 years ago.

Ever since, the dyes have been the staple of Camp Phae’lan’s trade. So much so that it has become the 5th richest place in Valissa.

Strange that one could ever come to consider trading dyes as a vital resource, especially for a kingdom such as Valissa. They are known for the power of their army or their onslaught of wars, both civil and against other kingdoms, yet Phae Dyes have somehow pushed through that unruly perception. And for Camp Phae’lan those dyes mean everything.

To say they feed the town, keep it running, and keep it afloat, would be an understatement. Although most of the income from their Phae Dye does go into repairs, what with the frequent floods, they still have enough coin for monthly celebrations.

Dyes of the World

As far as the production of Phae Dyes goes, ‘wolfbark blue’ is the most difficult to mix. The base material from the Wolfbark Willow trees is extremely tough and requires at least 5 hours of crushing and grinding before it can be mixed with the dying base. The longer you spend crushing the wolfbark, the darker the final shade of the dye is.

Another of the most popular Phae Dyes, ‘kyniere white’, has the most difficult base material to obtain. The base material for this dye is the ash-water root, which is only found at the bottom of Lake Kyniere during the winter.

Phae Dyes boast a vast amount of colour variations, more so than any of their competitors outside of Valissa. This particular feat comes from their production placement. All around Camp Phae’lan is a number of fungi, berries, bark, roots etc.

With an excess of base materials at their fingertips, they are able to freely experiment without having to worry about losing money should something go wrong. This gives Phae Dyes an extra edge over any other types of dye trade because they can offer something that no one else is comfortable doing so: custom colour mixes.

Most popular Phae Dyes include ‘wolfbark blue’, ‘kyniere white’, and ‘wildshroom purple’. These colours are the most popular because they are the representing colours for the Valissan kingdom sigil, as well as a large portion of other Valissan based insignias.

“You’re joking…” you say, eyes wide as you glance over at Sariel, who looks back with a smug smirk. “Please tell me you’re joking.”

You turn your gaze to the others, hoping that maybe they are all in on the joke, but they look just as confused.

“What, I thought you were eager to help out with the local communities whilst we were here?” Sariel replies. Still wearing that beaming smirk.

“I’m not about to go diving into a lake in midwinter,” you shoot back, crossing your arms and glancing away with a decisive huff. “Not for a few scraps of dying material…”

“I’ll tell Marigold you’re a maybe then?”

“Sariel–”

She laughs heartily at your warning, but otherwise doesn’t push further. “S’pose I’ll go diving all by myself then.”
