Second Chances Item in Oryth | World Anvil

Second Chances

The Scholars of Oryth have debated the meaning of the lost phrase Ad Nis Teirsist in Primordial, but they have narrowed it down to either meaning Rebirth, Death, or Life After Death. The magical properties of the item that holds the Medallion of Ad Nis Teirsist seem to keep them guessing as well, having both meanings able to be applied. The amulet is known as Second Chances for its ability to shrug off any blow that would have otherwise been fatal and allows its bearer to see into the Ethereal, allowing communion with the dead.

History

Unlike many of the other eight Relics of Ochrid which have seen many forms, Second Chances has been an amulet since its inception. When the written words of Ad Nis Tiersist was first spoken by the elder race of the Secundus, they forged it into its current form, encasing the medallion into a Mithral and Obinite locket with ornate filigree that accentuates the symbol of the medallion.

Seemingly lost to time, the medallion has not be seen on Oryth since early on in the Era of Ascenion. It vanished shortly after the Divine Wars and spent many years on the plane of Hades where it was found by the lesser deity, Indryth.

Indryth later passed it on to their disciples after being stripped of her divinity. It has since been passed down from the highest disciple in the Children of Crimson to be given to The Crimson upon completion of the Rites of Remembrance. It now lies in the hands of Calliope, a cervitaur searching for her twin brother, seeking to invoke the Rites in order to gain the memories and ancient power of the fallen deity.

Inner Workings

The power of Second Chances comes from the medallion inside the amulet which holds the power of the Secundus and one of the first written words by sentient creatures on Oryth. The obinite and mithral affect the leylines in such a way that harnesses the energies of life and death. Due to the immense power of Second Chances, the property that normally illuminates obinite is consumed by the amulet, amplifying its magic.

Crafting Process

The early Secundus artisans that crafted the powerful Relics of Ochrid spared no expense to craft the nine artifacts. Using the Medallion of Ad Nis Teirsist as the base, they uttered the Words of Power into the stone as expert artisans forged the metal to engulf it. Mithral and Obinite were smelted together to create a flexible, but durable, filagree. A master jeweler ornately crafted that shell as an arcane spellcaster sacrificed their own voice as the catalyst for the relic. Second Chances was an eight-hour ritual combining arcane and divine magicks to imbue the amulet.

Significance

As with all of the Relics of Ochrid, there is a great cultural significance in Second Chances. Though its location was lost many moons ago, the people of Ochrid see these relics not only as objects of great arcane power, but also proof of their divine rights as descendants of the Secundus. The Lyran Dynasty and Skjadi people fight over who has the purest claim to the relics.

Second Chances was claimed by the Indryth and passed onto their disciples after her divinity was lost. Since then, it has been kept safe by the Children of Crimson who have placed an enchantment on the item to return Hades should its power be abused. Any bearer of the amulet is charged to keep the relic a secret when not within the safety of the cult's walls. It is considered more valuable than any of their individual lives even The Crimson who is said to be the reincarnation of Indryth herself.

Command Words
Teirsiu Crux
Teirsiu Crux
/ˈteirsiu kruks/
  • Reciting the Primordial words meaning Death Speak, the voice of the wearer pierces the shroud of the Ethereal Plane, allowing them to ask questions to the spirit of a dead sentient being. This functions mechanically similar to the spell Talk to Dead, but instead of asking the memories of the corpse, it instead beckons the spirit itself, allowing them to answer questions that the corpse itself may not remember and requiring no corpse. This effect expands one charge from the item and may not be used more than once per spirit.
Ocu Ore
Ocu Ore
/ˈoku ˈoreː/
  • By uttering this Primordial phrase meaning Second Sight, the person attuned to Second Chances is able to peer into the Ethereal Plane. Mechanically, this allows the player to see any individual under the effect of invisibility. It also allows the user to interact with the Ethereal making effects such as Blink ineffective against the wearer. This effect expends two charges and lasts for 1 minute.
Passive Effects
Should the wearer attuned to this item take damage that would reduce them to below zero hitpoints, it instead reduces their hitpoints to one. This effect automatically expends three charges from Second Chances.

This item has 7 charges. At every dawn on the Material Plane, Second Chances regains a total of 1d4+1 charges. Should the power of the amulet cause the charge to be expended, it has a 10% chance of teleporting to the Tower of Indryth on the plane of Hades. Unlike most magical items with charges, the magic of the amulet can be reduced below zero. If this happens, increase the chance of teleportation by 10% for every number under zero.
