Indryth Character in Oryth | World Anvil

Indryth

(a.k.a. The Red Star)

Physical Description

Art By: Kaizavair

Body Features

Indryth typically appears in a feminine, human-like form. She is rarely seen in any garments or silks, preferring the elements of Oryth to touch her bare body as she walks the Material Plane. Their slender form purposely attempts to elicit a seducing response as they walk with a sultry, wavering stance that glides about the ground almost like a dance.

Facial Features

Indryth has a soft look about her face as stars and nebulas swirl around her piercing red eyes. Her long shimmering silver-blue hair waves in the air suspended as if underwater. They are almost always seen with a sad smile as if they have known many hardships and losses throughout their life. There is a deeper finality to her eyes, however, that gives an almost menacing look as she gazes into the onlooker's very soul.

Identifying Characteristics

Her body is a walking cosmos. Swirls of stars, planets, and nebulas stream over her body like liquid. If an object touches their skin, a visible ripple can be seen as if a rock puncturing the surface of the water. An ethereal wisp accompanies her every movement along with a soft chime of beautiful, soothing music.

Personal Characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

The Red Star was one of the few surviving deities after The Ascended rose to power and slew the Pantheon of Oryth. They gave up their power willingly, becoming a mortal in the process. Though she mourned the passing of her brothers, Celestian and Fharlanghn, she took this as an opportunity finally outshine her siblings. While most of the deities were passed, Indryth was able to spread her name unmolested throughout the lands to select people, allowing her cult, the Children of Crimson to grow into fruition over the passing centuries until finally regaining her divinity when the Divine Spark once again returned to the heavens.

Failures & Embarrassments

After being stripped of their power, Indryth was lost in the Material Plane without any clear direction aside from their survival. Though she would find out that her body still did not age, she quickly realized that her flesh was still very much capable of pain and could possibly be slain if she came across the wrong person. Due to the environmental hazards of Oryth, she would have to wear clothes but still preferred iridescent slightly non-opaque silks. They faced rejection for the first time in their life when attempting to bed a young prince who refused their advances. Stricken with a bout of uncontrollable rage, she slit the prince's throat, having to soon flee the kingdom.

Taboos

The biggest taboo of Indryth is disobedience. She believes that a worshipper of her faith should be solely devoted to her and her alone. Her jealousy knows no bounds and though she awards her zealot disciples with gifts of grandiose, she is quick to punish those who fail her or refuse her unquestionable command.

Motivation

Indryth is an extremely selfish being. Though they often appear as a caring, giving deity, the truth is that the kindness they show to others is for their own gain rather than attempting to help. She is often quick to use her gifts and deeds as weapons in arguments or in such a way that it furthers her goals first and foremost. Those who outlive their usefulness are quickly cast aside and forgotten.

Divine Qualities

Divine Domains

Only the truly devout are bestowed power from their deity which typically comes into two forms, Divine and Arcane. The Divine worshippers swear themselves to one of the domains that the Goddess Indryth has purview over. These domains are the Grave, Knowledge, Life, Light, Nature, Twilight, and Trickery. Others swear a deeper pact-like fascination with the goddess being bestowed eldritch prowess over the very fabric of reality itself.

Holy Books & Codes

Though there are no holy books of the edicts or tenets of Indryth, there are murals located in the ruins of an ancient Skjadi city to the northwest of Water's Edge. This place was dedicated originally to the Four Guardians, but after the city was sacked by the Lyran Dynasty, the ruins were left as a reminder of the Dynasty's strength and power. The Skjadi people consider these unhallowed grounds and steer clear of them. When Indryth was cast from the heavens, she converted this place into her own worshiping site, destroying all signs of the Four Guardians she could find and replacing them with stone-carved murals depicting her Tenets of Faith.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The symbol of Indryth is an ornate hamsa with a crimson eye in the center. This symbol is considered by the worshippers of Indryth as a sigil of protection and is worn by all of her followers. In addition to wearing a pendant with the hamsa, each follower tattoos a red eye on their left palm. It is said that Indryth can see through this eye of any of her followers and guide them through it. Upon reaching their 30th year of life, the eye will close and they will know it is time for them to give their body its final rest and return their soul to the cycle of reincarnation, performing a ritual to honor the Red Star. Should a follower of Indryth refuse to sacrifice themselves to the cause, the eye will vanish after one year and one day and they will have a vision suffering a horrific death for their disobedience. Any attempt to alter this fate creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Tenets of Faith

  • Find the Crimson and Keep them Holy. This tenet implies that once the current Crimson reaches the end of their life that Children must seek the new one. Until the Rites of Remembrance are performed, the Crimson will not recall their past life and must be persuaded by any means necessary to take the Rites so that they can lead the Children once more.
  • In Times of Despair, the Crimson will Guide Us. Granted power by the Goddess Indryth, the Crimson will have the power and edict to lead their people through the darkest of times.
  • Death is Salvation and Freedom of the Flesh. Death of the flesh is but one phase in the cycle of life. All things must return to the earth and anything that prolongs a life path their age of maturity is deemed to be imprisoning their very souls. Creatures of Undeath are considered blasphemies of this tenet and should be dispatched with due haste.
  • To Die Old is to Rebirth Weak. Upon the 30th year of life, a person is charged with taking their own life so that their soul may be returned to the cosmos and placed into a new body where its strength will be at its fullest, sharing their soul with its new vessel to give the newborn the best chance at life.
  • Look to the Red Star and Beckon its Power. Come the night of the Red Star should the Crimson be alive, the Children will give life and soul so that Indryth shall be reborn and once again walk among the Planes.

Holy Days

Worship of the Red Star is typically done on clear nights when the starlit sky is visible. Any days where Indryth can be seen by the naked eye are considered holy times for the Children of Crimson and when rituals are typically performed. Indryth is visible at various times throughout the year as a small red flickering light in the heavens. Upon reaching their 30th year of life, a follower will commit ritualistic suicide with any other followers who have reached the same age. The others will circle the follower in prayer and praise their contribution to their goddess and cause. The Crimson is said to be born when the Red Star is vibrantly lit in the night's sky when the moon is in the old, shining no light of its own. These are the holiest days to the practitioners of the Red Star.

I really like gods/pantheons that are more in the mold of ancient gods - petty, vengeful, cruel.. Flawed beings with great power. It makes for much more interesting storytelling. This definitely hits all of that - well done. :)
