Centaur Species in Oryth | World Anvil

Centaur

In the mystical lands of Ochrid, the centaurs find the open fields and booming natural surroundings most befitting of their kind. Though centaurs can be found most anywhere on Oryth, they seem to be most common in this part of the world. Even variants such as the cervitaur can be found here. It is unsure if these fey creatures originate from Oryth, or found their way here through a thinning of the veil between the Material Plane and the Fey Wilds.

Oryth's Calvary

Centaurs are smaller than a human riding a horse but often will fill similar roles in armed combat as their mounted allies. Though they lack the full size of a mounted soldier, their mobility and synchronicity with their equine half give them an immense advantage in this role. They often are used as scouts, outrides, and messengers due to their speed.

Tramplers

At a young age, centaurs are taught to use every possession of theirs effectively in battle. Their hooves being no exception. Using their strong equine bodies, they can charge at their opponents, using their sturdy hooves to bash their opponents and trample them to the ground.

Of Human

Centaurs have the upper bodies of muscular humanoids and look as diverse in skin tones and racial features as humans display on Oryth. Their ears as slightly points, but not as much as even the average half-elf. Their faces tend to be broader with strong jawlines, growing facial hair much in the same way as humans. Much of the more tribal centaurs will adorn their faces and human bodies with piercings or tattoos that match their more animalistic markings.

Of Equine

Below their wastes, they have the bodies of small horses and are colored similarly with various shades of browns, or speckled whites and grays. Depending on their regions, they can even display unique patterns like that of a zebra. Their hair tends to start on the hair and flow down to their backs like the manes of a horse, leading the way to their long-haired tails.

Unlike domesticated horses, most wild centaur breed with strong mates and have no use of horseshoes, however, centaurs that live with other humanoids can often display a weakening in their hooves, requiring the need of specialized shoeing.

Horse of a Different Color

There are many variants of centaur representing different animal types. A common variant, but still rare among the already uncommon race, is the cervitaur. A deer-like variant that gallops effortlessly through the woods of Oryth and the Fey Wilds. They are even more reclusive than their equine cousins, but the slightly lither and spotted. Their ears are elongated and dropped and they often are decorated with natural growing antlers coming from their head.
