“This isn’t like you,” she says, disappointed. “Ever since we were kids, you did what was right. Mahan’s panties—you even pushed me to spend summers with my own people and learn the ways of The Whisper.”
“Yeah,” you say, “and I’m never sure if I should feel bad about that.”
Dorbane laughs.
“Haw-haw,” she mocks, sticking out her tongue at the Kutollum. “These are innocent people. We don’t actually know if there’s someone else behind it all. What if they find out—especially once we get Dagan and Aggie back to their homes? Surely they’ll be noticed?”
You hadn’t thought about that.
The idea of being hunted or killed by thugs in the shadows of an unfamiliar city flash through your mind. “Being found dead in an alley…or ANYwhere for that matter, doesn’t sound encouraging.”
You look at your Kutollum friend and realize Dorbane is thinking the same thing.
“We’re screwed,” you say in unison.
