Try to wake a hostage up #56

All of this is moving too fast—there’s not enough time. No plan, no way to prepare…lives at stake.   But something pricks your mind.   There’s a reason your friends follow you. A reason you gained the respect of an entire village…even though you were a lowly orphan. You are driven to do what’s right, because it’s right—not because it’s easy or convenient. You’ve defended others from wolves, bears, raiders and even invading clans.   …three soldiers, you can do.   Right, you tell yourself, crazy or not, we all go home tonight.   Crawling quietly through the brush, you make your way around the camp and up the ridge, above the embankment. Maybe I can wake them?   With Gunther and the others distracted, it doesn’t sound like such a bad plan. Not a good plan,…but not terrible.   There’s a roar from the far side of the camp and Dorbane jumps into the light, swinging his axe. The leader rolls from the stone and sparks fly as the axe glances of it. Gunther draws his sword and runs towards the fray.   A scream then splits the night air as Valda dashes from the shadows nearby. She’s wielding a tree branch and swings it with all her might at the soldier by the camp fire. The solder reaches for his sword, but is met by the wood—knocking his helmet clean off his head. The body flips backwards, feet over head.   That girl is insane!   You’re already on your feet and sliding down the embankment. Her attack catches Gunther’s attention…and he turns on the Gypsy.   Valda see’s you and flings her crude weapon in your direction, spinning past Gunther’s first thrust of his sword. Her hand grabs at the sword standing near the fire, but the trained soldier spins with her, blade slicing deep through her arm.   She screams.   Red flows down her arm and it goes limp. Gunther follows up with a punch to Valda’s face, sending her sprawling onto the ground.   He’s going to kill her!   You snatch the branch from the ground and race to save your best friend.   Go to page #7
