Follow the Tracks #75

The footprints lead up through the rocks.
It’s easy enough at first, to follow the wet mud, but the further the trail goes, the tracks quickly fade.
“The mud’s drying out,” you growl.
“We’re going to lose him!” sneers Dorbane.
Hopping from rock to rock, you look for smaller signs…ANYthing to help you get back on course.
Then you hear it. The scraping of metal.
Without a word, the Gypsy is leaping ahead of you, scrambling higher onto rocks until finally, she drops down onto her belly.
“Psst!” she hisses, waving wildly at you.
Both you and Dorbane catch up and drop to a crawl.
Valda has a huge grin on her face. She points over the edge.
The soldier is slipping down the rock face. There’s a small path that leads back in the direction you just came from, hidden from sight. …a path that leads back to camp.
You start to stand up and the Gypsy grabs your arm.
“Don’t,” she warns. “He doesn’t know we see him.”
Sure enough, the soldier stops, adjusting his armor. He looks around him. After a moment, he hops down to the path and starts running full out.
“Let’s take him by surprise,” she adds.
