“Excellent!” McDonnell grins, “That’s what this country needs—true patriots, who are willing to serve for the good of the people!” He walks around the table and shakes your hand, then Valda’s, though his eyes linger on her just a bit…too long, in fact.
When he comes to his senses, he places an arm around each of you, turning you towards the entrance flap of the tent. “Report to Sergeant Stuart and he’ll get you prepped for your first assignment.”
“First assignment?” you ask, “Already??”
You hesitate and Rodrick looks at you questioningly, “Something wrong, soldier?”
“Well…sir, …aren’t we supposed to go through some sort of training first?” Even Valda looks thoroughly confused.
The recruiter laughs, “Nonsense! This is a time of war—we learn by DOING. We use the local strength to take care of local problems. Now report to Stewart and welcome to the elite!”
And with that, Rodrick McDonnell shoves you out into the daylight.
